Permies Movie Night

Now a Perennial Favorite!

You know what I love?  A good ol' fashioned movie night.  So I was thinking to myself, "self - why don't we have a permies movie night?"

So here we are.  I elected myself chairperson of the permies movie night board of directors and scheduled our first event.

You may be asking yourself, "self - how is this gonna work?"

To which I would respond:

Let's vote on a movie via a little poor man's poll in the comments below, and then I'll update this thread with a link to the publicly available film of our choosing.

Then comes the fun part - we all get to come back to the movie thread and talk about the movie!  Kinda like a book club, but one where you don't have to read.  (Except then you do have to read to participate in the discussion part on the forum, but I digress . . .)

Now, technically speaking, one could watch the movie at any time.  And I guess that's okay too, but there's something kinda magical about the thought of all of us popping our own popcorn, firing up our own viewing accouterments, and letting 'er rip . . . together.

So who's with me?  I've got me, my wife, Kristen, and our two kiddos, so that's 4 so far . . .

Vote below, and let me know you're in with a comment.

*edit to say:  I have now compiled all of our past movie night threads into this one, and will periodically update this top post with an ongoing list of previous permies movie nights.

My friends and I (we refer to ourselves as "the nerd herd") have been doing a Friday evening sci-fi night in this same manner since the first lockdowns in 2020. It's worked very, very well for us and allowed us to maintain our connections to each other despite COVID and everything else that's been going on. The only difference is our movie/show follow up is via a Zoom call (practical since our group is fewer than ten people) rather than a forum topic.

No preference for movie choice, but looking forward to watching and discussing with the rest of you!

I nominate the 1978 classic Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes, watchable on YouTube:

Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes

"We were hit by a kamikaze tomato!" "Tomatoes can't fly!" "Yeah? Well, they can't eat people, either, but they're doing one hell of a job of that!"

The audience can do a sing-along with the smash hit Puberty Love!

OMG, that looks awesome.  I'm gonna have to shelf it for a Permies Movie Night: After Hours Addition, because I don't wanna have that conversation with my 5-year-old tonight!

Here is my suggestion. Hands

HANDS is a unique, multi-award winning series of thirty-seven documentaries on Irish crafts. Made by the renowned filmmaking team, David and Sally Shaw-Smith, it was originally produced for Irish television (RTÉ). Imbued by a sense of urgency, the Shaw-Smiths travelled the length and breadth of Ireland during the 1970s and ’80s, capturing on film the final years of traditional rural and urban life. These intimate portraits are as much about the life of the individuals as the crafts they practised. The films capture the essence of Irish heritage, creating a unique archive of life in Ireland at the end of the 20th century.

Unless a wave of folks come in and sway the voting, it's looking like Edward's suggestion :
Fools and Dreamers
will be the movie du jour.

It's a shortie (less than 30 minutes), so feel free to stack it with a choose-your-own-double-feature if you're jonesing for more.

Me, I'm happy to have the shorter film tonight as my kiddos have a swim lesson later - this way we can do both!

I think I'll direct our viewing and discussion to this thread so that all over our insights and interaction can benefit the permies community in perpetuity.

Thoughts?

One idea:

The Idiocracy.  2006 American science fiction

It’s about an hour or an hour and a half, I think.    Here’s the Wikipedia link https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy

But I have no idea how to find a viewing link

Laugh til your ribs ache, cry for the truth and accuracy!

Another suggestion is about the Loess Plateau, search documentary loess plateau, and lots of videos come up.  I watched one a few years ago about an hour long.  I don’t know which to suggest, but a huge expanse (35000 square kilometers , population 50 million) of degraded land was restored.

Breath taking success story.

Regreening the desert with John D. Liu | VPRO Documentary | 2012
4,507,662 views  8 May 2017  For more than 15 years, cameraman and ecologist John D. Liu has been working on his worldwide mission to green deserts and to restore biodiversity.

It all started in 1995 when Liu filmed the Loess-plateau in China. He witnessed a local population who turned an area of almost the same size as The Netherlands from a dry, exhausted wasteland into one green oasis. This experience changed his life. From that moment on, Liu has been travelling all over the world to convince and inspire government leaders, policy-makers and farmers with his film material and knowledge. Liu diligently spreads the message that restoration of ecosystems is not only possible, but also economically very meaningful.
Backlight accompanies Liu on his mission in Jordan and shows on the basis of Liu’s own film material that a green future is possible worldwide.

I've just added (almost) all of them to my watchlist (except for the one of the killer tomatoes).
And my suggestion is "Back to Eden" - "a documentary film that shares the incredible story of American gardener and arborist Paul Gautschi and his lifelong journey learning how to get back to the garden of Eden. The documentary, streaming online for free, has received over 50 million views in every country in the world. The film ignited a world-renowned regenerative organic gardening movement that regenerates the soil and restores soil biodiversity."

Permies Movie Night - Friday, July 29, 2022

We had a really great time last week, watching Fools and Dreamers, and the ensuing conversation was illuminating and delightful!

Seems like maybe folks wanna give it another go, so here we are.

The fine print, copied from last week

Let's vote on a movie via a little poor man's poll in the comments below, and then I'll update this thread with a link to the publicly available film of our choosing.

Then comes the fun part - we all get to come back to the movie thread and talk about the movie!  Kinda like a book club, but one where you don't have to read.  (Except then you do have to read to participate in the discussion part on the forum, but I digress . . .)

Now, technically speaking, one could watch the movie at any time.  And I guess that's okay too, but there's something kinda magical about the thought of all of us popping our own popcorn, firing up our own viewing accouterments, and letting 'er rip . . . together.

In a similar wonderful approach to hands.ie, how about the Documentales from Eugenio Monesma, available here: https://www.youtube.com/c/eugeniomonesma/videos

Some wonderful old handcrafts and skills from Spain. As a non-spanish speaker, for me this also qualifies as foreign film festival. Luckily the videos are captioned, but that wonderful Spanish sounds makes the experience quite special.

I’ll watch what ever consensus decides.

This will be my last Friday in this home.

What I will try to do is get a link and description for the David Liu documentary on land restoration, on a piece of land the size of Belgium.  Fertile productive land to blowing sand to pastures and orchards….

I have a night or two in a motel, then next Friday I will watch the consensus film the first Friday in my new location!  (14 A , ponderosa pines and incense cedar.  Oh boy)

It will give me some continuity since all else in the world, let alone my life, is tipsy turvey!

Fantastic Fungi is playing from July 26th to August 1st.

They are not vegetables, and not meat, but somewhere in between.

And they may hold the key to saving our planet.

New mushroom-based technologies can now filter water, clean up oil spills, create new soil, and directly send nutrients to plant saplings.

Add to this the fact that they are a source of food and medicine, which can treat mental, anxiety, depression, fatigue, & sleep issues, and fight disease.

All of the ways fungi are important in our lives (and future) are explored in this special event edition of the film: Fantastic Fungi.

Originally released in 2019, it still maintains a 100% rating on the famous film critic website Rotten Tomatoes until this day.

It's an incredibly moving and inspiring story that I'm sure you will love, and a MUST-SEE for anyone who cares about the future of the planet, and health.

Fantastic Fungi
