This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Rocket.

This BB requires you to start and operate a j-tube rocket mass heater for one hour. You are not required to build your own rocket mass heater but you will need access to one.

The following video will help you with the task of starting a j-tube rocket mass heater and operating it.

From the video description:

Ernie Wisner is going to show you the proper way of starting a rocket mass heater.  He explains what the process entails as he goes about the task.  First he explains that the heat riser and chimney need to be warmed up by lighting some paper balls and some small dry kindling wood.  He adds kindling to the wood feed and once it's well lit, he explains that these stoves work best when they are well fed and full of dry wood.

It takes about a minute and thirty seconds to get the stove lit, then Ernie talks for a bit about the bypass system that this particular stove has, which allows it to be exhausted out of the roof or through a chimney exiting through the wall.  He then goes on to explain the signs of a good burn and what kinds of temperatures you can expect from a system like this one.  Ernie is tinkering with the stove as it's still new and he makes some minor adjustments and explains how there's a breaking-in process for a new rocket mass heater.

Once the heater is all warmed up, Ernie takes a look outside at the chimney where there is no evidence of smoke, telling him that the rocket mass heater is performing the way it should be.  It's burning clean!

My first time firing up an RMH, at Wheaton Labs base camp. It was the Cottage Rocket made by Uncle Mud... I split some kindling, primed the secondary barrel, got the main fire going, then tended the fire for an hour. Thanks to Fred, Robby and Jeremy for the tips on this specific RMH! 😊

I started one of the J tubes here at basecamp ran it from 1:30 to 2:30

At the same time I'm hoping to get the boiling 1gallon bb, so after the water was booked I just kept the fire going for the rest of the hour. (I used the boiling water for rice in the hey box cooker, but I didn't get that haybox cooker to work right yet)

Staff note (paul wheaton) :

For future peeps: we're letting this BB submission be complete, but future folks need to fire up a j-tube on a rocket mass heater. This j-tube is not connected to a rocket mass heater.

Say "Hello There" to my little friend!

I ran the RMH in the fisher-price house for an hour and twenty minutes over lunch on Day 2 of my stay for the  Jamboree.

Here's some pics too:

I was working with a flip phone camera with no flash.  Later badge bits are pictured more clearly as they were taken outdoors or I have added supplemental lighting.

These are the burnables I used to warm the heat riser of rocket mass heater in the FPH. I operated the RMH for an hour before my mom showed up today.

This is the started fire I made.

This is the first load of wood I put in.

I started up my RMH for the first time this season today.  So I took some photos for this BB while I was at it.  I realize now I probably should have kept the camera flash off for the shots of adding additional wood.  Hopefully you can still see the bit of fire and don't think I was just rearranging firewood in a hole!  ;)

This is my RMH with extra crap on and around it. Someday I will actually finish it with tile and stone slabs.

These are the burnables I'll be using to start and maintain the burn. I keep a grocery bag for my junk mail to start the fire, a bin of kindling, and the wood.

I've got the fire started now. It took extra effort since this was the first burn of the season and everything was cold.

Here is my submission for the Rocket - Sand - Start and Operate a J-Tube Rocket Mass Heater BB.

I started the RMH in the Library at Wheaton Labs.  The Barrell had been recently cleaned out, Josiah cleaned out the J-Tube, and I got to light it.  It did smoke back some but we got it lit and running smoothly.

To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following:
