I am gir bot! A rather limited bot buried deep within the bowels of this forum software. I come to life once in a while to post about my favorite things!

Today I am programmed to announce six promotions.

These four actual living, breathing, meatspace people have been promoted from "steward" to "master steward" for the rest of this month!

Burra Maluca
paul wheaton
R Ranson
John Polk

Thanks Gir!  And thanks to permies members for being so wonderful.  You guys really do make this the nicest place on the internet.  It's a privilege to serve.

Thank you to the other staff, super and everyone, for all your hard work to keep this place running smoothly.

Thank you who are listed here to make this forum a great place to visit and share!

Why is the promotions limited to "the rest of this month"?

Edit: I mean: Why are these promoted status limited to "the rest of this month"?

From what I recall, I think these promotions come from automated algorithms that are based on counting different things that staff do for us behind the scenes. We wanted a way to recognize all the good that these awesome volunteers are doing without causing more work for an individual. So, a program, "gir bot," generates this for us kind of like an employee or volunteer of the month award. Having it be monthly allows us to recognize and celebrate more people.

A lot of this goodness isn't seen by most users, like blocking or deleting spam, so it's not something that you can even award an apple to. Though these things are HUGE in making permies the cool place that it is!

Thanks Jocelyn!

Where my confusion lies is this.

"Why are these promoted status limited to "the rest of this month"?"

Is the promotion lasting less than one month? Do they lose their promotion at the end of the month.

Thanks!

As Jocelyn said

...these promotions come from automated algorithms that are based on counting different things that staff do for us behind the scenes.

At the end of each month, 'gir bot' totals each of staff's accumulated points for the current month.  The top scorers get the promotion for the next month.
Each of us has things to do in 'the real world', so the time that each of us has to monitor the site will vary from month to month.  By doing this promotion on a monthly basis, it allows more of staff to get the chance of being one of the 'top guns'.

Thank you John & Jocelyne! I now understand.  It's like "moderators of the month".

Thanks again to all who make this a great forum!
