making audio "ads" in the podcasts

I keep thinking I need to write the scripts for a bunch of ads to put into the podcasts and I keep not doing it.

Just now I was talking to Grey about this and the idea popped up .....

...   the one "ad" like thing we have now was made by ryan.   What if other people recorded ads and we used those?  People could choose whatever they think is cool and come up with their own words.   "Hi, I'm ryan, and i like ....   "  so you could ad your name and your own ideas.   You could list stuff that makes money for the empire like the movies or the book, or stuff that doesn't like the book review grid or a particular forum.   Maybe encourage people to sign up for the dailyish - maybe mention the freebies.  Maybe the bootcamp or deep roots.  Maybe mention the whole digital market. Maybe point out how ALL the podcasts are available in one gob here  https://permies.com/wiki/37733/giant-gob-podcasts-videos-stuff

Plenty of ideas here:  https://permies.com/stuff

Anybody wanna have a go?

I like the idea that something could be placed at the beginning, the middle, or the end.

No more than 30 seconds please!

Great idea Paul - I’m all for authenticity so this would fit well with your show.

Is this the kind of thing you had in mind?

“Hi, I’m Edward Norton, no not that one, the other one, and I love pies, no not that kind, the other kind. Permies is an old school forum packed full of friendly people, who occasionally give out a slice of pie. You’ll never forget your first slice of pie. It made me feel so good, I had to buy a whole pie so I could share the love. Oh, and there’s apples too. Sign up at permies.com to join in the world of homesteading and permaculture and you too might get a slice of pie.”

Maybe a little cheesy . . .

Slice of pie audio advert (29 seconds)

Maybe need a voice actor . . .

Because I haven't tamed my mammoth yet . . . I'm working on it. I did make a few recordings but I'm also a bit of a perfectionist and there was too much background noise . . . actually that was the mammoth as well.

Paul, an idea for you, stolen from a public radio show I like.

People who donate can record the show credits, saying their own name and location at the start. If you're a public radio nerd it's super awesome to have your name out there.
I know the audience is a bit different, and not sure you have show credits to read out, but imagine if as an incentive for buying pie people got the chance to record a little something, even if it's just "Hey, I'm Tereza from Brazil, here to remind you that pie is fabulous and helps keep the lights on!"

(I'm also curious to know what you need in terms of format/files/length etc. I used to do a bit of voice work and I'd be fine recording something for you, assuming I can get the ambient noise down to acceptable levels around here)

Here's my spoken 28 second permies add in mpa format.

It's Friday and I just got my BB10 badge, so the mammoth is currently nowhere to be seen.

Come on people - go for it! Don't worry about file format, I'm sure Paul has a Java library somewhere for converting audio files.

I think that you pick a thing, and then record about 20 to 30 seconds about it - and make sure to include mention of a URL so people can find the thing.

Is it possible to attach an mp3 to a post here?

I think ...  attach an mp3 as a file to a post in this thread.

As for "what" ...   what is your favorite thing in my empire?  Probably a thing that a person can buy, so it earns it's keep as "a commercial".  But there are also some free things that could use promoting.  Like all the free stuff that you get when you sign up for the dailyish email.   Or the book review grid.  The bootcamp?  Events at wheaton-labs.com?

What part of the empire do you wish people to know more about?

Yes, the better world book!

How about something a little more dramatic and strongly worded?

My voice doesn't sound so steady, if anyone is feeling it and wants to steal the script and use it please go for it.

Cant upload my audio, it says "files with the extension bwb" even tho it's not the extension. I blame the illuminati.

Anyway, here's my script:

My name is Joshua Myrvaagnes and I am scared--scared about what Code Red means for our climate. A few years ago I wanted to cease offering my money to the organizations causing these problems, and when I learned it was my heat bill that was my contribution, I turned off my heat! I didn't die because I had the Building a Better World book--permies.com/w/paul-wheaton.

This is great!  It could use some Michael Bay Directed music, but otherwise A+!  Also I think it would be funnier to keep your voice disaster-movie-dramatic for the "good vibes" part too.  People fending off zombie hoards with good vibes and hugelkulturs.  Just keep it flat through the whole damn thing.  This is excellent.  Nailed the disaster flick voice!

Using the normal reply (not quick reply) there is an attachment tab that lets you upload any file.

PIE! PIE! and more PIE!

Here is my script for an ad:

"Hey this is tblankinship are you a fan of pie? Well there is pie at permies.com. This pie grants the user with secret access.  You also get free things like videos of Wheaton labs, the ability to add two thumbs up to posts and more. To get pie go to permies.com/wiki/pie to get the inside scoop on what pie can do for you.  Again that is permies.com/ wiki/pie."

I am working on an mp3 of the ad. It is a little of an learning curve for me right now.

I succeeded in tricking the thing into uploading the file, but I doubt if it can be downloaded now.  If you can download it, then just change the extension to ".mp3" and it should play.  If that doesn't work, just use the link I put a few posts up, that should take you right to the file and hopefully can be downloaded.

I don't know why it's having this bug where I can't upload .mp3 on this or any other computer.

Paul, it's your show, if it doesn't fit your humor then pass on by.  It doesn't seem to have gone viral yet so I doubt it's losing listeners to cut it.

If it's just that it's too loud, I can adjust the levels

I may make another ad at some point, I had fun making it.

Another thought, I would actually really miss the usual music intro and outro, it's a part of the mood of the podcast, even if I fast forward through most of it.

Maybe adding the ad before the regular music would work.
