Hello again! This topic is dedicated to our test audience on the memes. Here our meme volunteers will be posting their initial memes, and the meme test audience will be commenting and discussing the memes posted here so that they are more effective on the general public. Also, somethings in the memes may be easier to correct than other, like spelling and grammar mistakes. Making the memes effective and attention-grabbing is going to be the hardest part, and that is where the meme test audience's comments and discussions play a vital role in the creation of the finalized memes.

A few things to remember:
We are not trying to summarize ALL of permaculture at once; we are trying to resonate with one brick at a time to attract people to permies.com and the permaculture world.
All memes must reflect the values of permaculture: be nice, be gentle.

For the test audience:
Please give a thumbs up if you think that the meme is good, post a comment about anything you might do differently.
If/once a staff member thinks the meme is good enough for 'mass distribution' they should give it an apple to show that the meme's ready for to be posted in the actual Meme Factory Thread.

For the meme-maker:
Please wait to post your meme to the actual meme factory until a staff member feels like it's good enough for an apple. That way it's the cream of the crop in the final thread.

Have fun! =)

Hahaha loving that one Ryan.

Dave, could we possibly use a more bold or visible font? I am having a bit of a hard time reading the text on some of yours.

Am I derailing this thread? Just let me know. I can stick to nice ones. But when I think memes, this is what I think of.

Yes, Cassie, you are welcome to use a bigger font. Those were the first ones. We'll improve in time. Sorry for not replying sooner; I have started my college visits now and I won't have any new meme posts until I return home around July 2nd. -- I'm going to test a few apps for making memes on my phone and see if that works. Then, I won't have to wait until I get home-- We'll also be visiting relatives along the way. Thank you everyone for the lovely posts you have made. Keep them coming! =)

I like your meme Cassie! Sometimes a little interest picker like that is useful to draw people's attention. Maybe more people will value their pee..... Hmmm very thought provoking

Chad, I think pointing fingers at the bad guys is less of the message we are trying to convey here at permies.com. We want to aim more for memes that draw people's interest without accusing anyone of anything. I do appreciate your efforts.

So what will be done with these memes? Shared on social media? Or what sort of role do they play?

My goal with these memes is that the entire permies.com community will have access to all memes posted to these threads and will be able to share them whenever they want to, how ever they want to. They may post them on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Google+, etc. The only obligation is that they must reflect the ideals of permaculture in their behavior on the Internet. I know etiquette is dying on some parts of the Internet, but we can try to attract people to permaculture through our actions online/offline.

The role of the memes within the permaculture empire is to attract the younger generation into permaculture so that the idea and concept can live for many years and hopefully infect/permeate into as many minds as possible. This would hopefully end up making a better world if we can show them the cool things that we do. Essentially, it is advertising the empire. We're trying to resonate the many bricks of permaculture to such a pitch and tune in the memes that we draw in people that are interested in each brick. More minds= more people = more discussion = more + better ideas =? a better world + bigger empire

not sure this lettering shows up well enough against the background...this is another invert....seems there has to be a lot of color and contrast in my original photo for it to work since both light and color are reversed. just playing....got to get outside soon before it gets too hot.

EDITED TO ADD REDONE PHOTO....black text. and I think still too hard to read.

I think they are great. One suggestion would be to maybe put permies.com in a bigger font or something so it stands out more, so people know where we are trying to get them to go, what we are "advertising" or what not.

EDIT TO ADD TEXT from your meme....I thought the picture would appear in the quote........"Stacking functions occurs in nature....apply the same concept to gardens homes and more at permies.com"

maybe...."nature stacks functions.....find out how you can too....at permies.com"

Your memes are wonderful Judith! This is not meant to be a big time commitment; it is meant to be a fun thing to do in one's free time for anyone interested to play with technology, have fun, and attract younger generations to permaculture. If you have any online accounts, feel free to post any of the completed memes from the Meme Factory thread online, and as always be nice! =)

One suggestion, for the hugelkultur meme, I think the word "exciting" would be easier to read if the entire phrase was moved to the right side of the picture.

Charles! I like that the method you are using for meme creation creates a discussion. This would probably be good for explaining topics quickly to people who have never heard of permaculture before. I think your meme is ready for the Meme Factory thread! I look forward to seeing the memes you create, Charles!

Judith, the fourth one is my favorite! I like how text has been nicely contrasted with the photo, and the text is balanced so that each phrase recieves equal emphasis.

h

thanks, cassie and dave....this morning I like the third and fourth one also....i like the yellow for 'hugelkultur' more than the creme. My 'paint' program doesn't let me edit (or I haven't figured it out) without starting all over with a new picture...so by the time I begin again all is forgotten from the previous pic. I did learn that I have to 'resize' the photo on my camera in order to see the whole thing at once in the 'paint' program. There is so much i don't know!

one more try on this one....then i'll give it up. I guess too much color variation and it is hard to find the correct color text to show.
I guess these need to be clearly visible on a cell phone screen?

Judith, the first and second memes are fantastic and easy to read

Yes, the color variations do need to be fairly solid so that a contrasting text fits in easily for reading.

I like that quote, Shawn; however, those are Sepp Holzer's words which will require his permission to use. It would be best if we stuck to resonating with different bricks of permaculture or quoting Paul Whaeton because he monitors and rules this forum so it might be easy to ask for his permission to quote him in the memes we create to attract people permies.com and permaculture.

What if I removed the permies tag? because if you google sepp holzer , permies is #5 on the list, so it would be an indirect route. just a thought
