This morning, this bird landed in the top of one of our taller old oak trees. I can't figure out what it is, and I've tried several apps, including Merlin & Audobon. About the size of a hawk or raven, but the break is wrong for a raptor and the color is more reds & browns, with black in the tail. It perched up there for about 10 minutes, before flying off. I'm within a few hundred miles of the center of the contiguous 48 states.

There is a reddish brown Magpie and the picture looks like he has some white, which would be normal, but the colors are washed out in the photo...

Could it be an adult male robin?  Could you tell what color the beak was?  Maybe a thrush?

I've never seen a robin that big. This guy was the size of a hawk.

Funny you should mention "the center of the contiguous 48 states" I was just there the other day...

>> This guy was the size of a hawk.

The leaves are a bit closer to the camera - so the perspective may be a little off - but, my estimation of the size may be a bit skewed, too - but the size of the bird, in flight, was what caught my attention.  At this point - especially since I haven't seen it, since - I'm just confused, and it doesn't seem worth pursuing. I think whatever it was, it was just passing through.
