What kind of flower is this ? Hen and Chicks

It looks like a variety of what I always called 'hens and chicks', a succulent.  They grow outdoors here and will spread by sending out 'chicks' from the mother plant.  Yours may be meant for a house plant?  It does look flower like, but those are leaves not petals.

The botanic name is Sempervivum.  They grow on house roofs and traditionally protected the house from lightning strikes, and another interesting colloquial name is "welcome home husband however drunk you be".  'swhat it says in my book anyway.
