Summary

Samantha won a consultation with Paul on a kickstarter, so Paul is at Samantha's place.  She's already listened to some of Pauls's podcasts and attended PTJ.

Samantha recently moved house to a place she's known for some years.  It had a large grass yard which used to be mostly left alone bar for mowing or watering in the summer.  Samantha was inspired by the idea of GAMCOD - grow a million calories on dirt, since she's starting with dirt.  She fenced off the garden and had 2 horses in it during the winter.  The horses were fed pesticide/herbicide free hay and other food As a result, there's lots of manure!  The horses also cut up the sod handily.

Paul talks a bit about the GAMCOD idea which was going to have five 1-acre gardens with gardeners competing to grow the most calories, but apparently $35/hour wasn't enough to tempt people, so it didn't happen.

Samantha has made hügelkultur beds, but Paul isn't that impressed with their size.  However they were made only with material on-site.  Paul thinks they are light on the wood content, and Samantha agrees she could have done more: e.g. importing more wood from another site.

Paul comments that the fertility is patchy, some of the tomatoes are not fruiting due to too much nitrogen, but others are.

Samantha has a lot of things planted:  She's aiming for the BB for growing 10,000 calories with at least 12 species.  However, it's not all plain sailing as while she was at PTJ, the geese got in the garden and ate a bunch of stuff.  The BB has conditions: you can import seed but plants can only be from the immediate area (less than 500ft away).  They add up what's growing including perennials like dandelion and mallow (which count), they conclude there likely are 12 species.  Samantha has been eating stuff from the garden though, and it might not all be documented.
