Summary
Paul and others meet at lunch on day 11 of
Alan Booker's
PDC. Today's topic is "whether or not to go to college" and Paul comments that things have changed in 10-12 years since he last talked about this. Now it typically costs over $100K to go to college for 4 years. If you have to pay for it, that's a long time working in a worky job to pay it off. Now we have SKIP, that's an alternative to college for people to learn
permaculture. Brent comments that as
energy and living costs keep rising, people are more likely to get ahead without going to college. Paul thinks that if you're keen on permcaulture, going to college can delay being able to do anything about it for years.
Alan Booker joins them and Paul immediately wants him to say
should people go to college, yes or no. Alan refuses to be caught, he says it depends on temperament. However, Alan says that things are different now from the 1980s: back then an engineering degree was a no-brainer. Employers now are less concerned with undergrad degrees, more concerned with ability. An undergrad degree is a certificate of compliance more than knowledge. Even becoming a lawyer isn't a guaranteed earner as AI is taking over many duties that junior lawyers traditionally did. Paul suggests that a youngster who's keen on permaculture could do a couple of years of SKIP and potentially inherit a property and, effectively, retire at age 19 or 20. He credits
Mike Oehler with being a pain in the ass and pushing to develop SKIP and
PEP. Alan talks about trust: Otises need to trust, and there are no longer the small communities where people know everyone, so trust has to be by proxy: recruiters trust by proxy, using college results. He hopes that completing SKIP/PEP can allow Otises to trust potential inheritors by proxy. Alan sees multiple possibilities linking SKIPpers with Otises: for example, an Otis might hire someone based on their SKIP/PEP credentials.
