Hello Permies.com,
I have just moved into a homestead in Kentucky and am working with the host family on transitioning it into a
Permaculture Design that will regenerate both the
land and everyone's wallets.
The owners of the land already has a bit set up, including an electrical fenced-in coop of chickens and lambs guarded by a lovely pair of 1 year old Great Pyr dogs, male and female.
The issue here is that soon I will have to start servicing the coop area myself and one of the Pyr dogs, the male, does not take kindly to me being anywhere near the area.
I know that this is just him being a good guard dog, so I have respected this and have not tried to force a relationship.
This morning I went into the pen and allowed them to come and sniff me. I didn't really acknowledge them, just stayed calm and still, didn't lock eyes, make noise or try and pet them. Just kind of looked into the horizon while the male sniffed.
They were both pretty wary of me and eventually the male began to stand his ground and growl meaning "Get the hell out of my territory." I politely obliged, calmly and slowly leaving the area.
I know these dogs are extremely intelligent and with me being a new arrival and all, I am not sure how feasible it will be to try and establish dominance//friendship this early.
Can someone with
experience advise me on how to approach our interactions so these dogs will at least begin to get more comfortable with me?
I have never had Pyr's, I did have a German Shepard and am used to having a super loyal, playful companion so this is a tad unnerving for me.
Thanks y'all!
