This position is responsible for all activities related to the implementation of the UDS Garden including but not limited to leading the design and planning of garden production and program activities; coordinating planting, maintenance, and harvesting of garden produce year round; coordinating harvests and delivery of produce to the Dining Services kitchen staff; working in a public environment interacting with students, faculty, staff, guests, and the Missoula community; answering questions and providing tours; planning program activities including workshops, demonstrations, and classes; acting as outreach coordinator by organizing special events, updating social media and web-based marketing tools; working with UDS Marketing for marketing material needs, and acting as a liaison with UM academic departments such as Environmental Studies, Biology, Forestry, and others; demonstrating leadership, goal oriented, and initiative in supervising the Student Garden Assistant and volunteers; and working with interested students and student groups on proposals, projects, or internships and providing general oversight of student projects as they pertain to work within the UDS Garden.

The Garden Manager reports directly to the Farm to College Coordinator and requires a high degree of initiative and independence as the position is often working on their own or in the presence of the Student Garden Assistant and any volunteers or interns. The level of complexity with this position is also high with tasks ranging from physical garden activities from weeding and harvesting, to making strategic plans for program activities including workshops and demonstrations, updating social media sites, recruiting new volunteers, and coordinating with community partners and contractors.

This position requires incumbent to develop expert knowledge of specific organic growing techniques as they pertain to urban environments and the specific site needs of the UDS garden; expert knowledge of the history, details, and needs of the UDS garden program and UDS units; working knowledge of vermicomposting systems, beekeeping, and mushroom cultivation; relationships with area nurseries, farms, agricultural organizations, and UM academic departments; working knowledge of youth gardening curriculum and ability to effectively supervise and teach children between the ages of 7 and 18; knowledge of both garden- and kitchen-related food safety requirements for institutions; knowledge of UM and UDS administration and processes for project approval; ability to install, repair, and problem solve drip and netafim irrigation systems; knowledge of general grounds maintenance needs including fixing fences, gates, and equipment; carpentry and building skills for building and maintaining UDS Garden infrastructure, including season extension infrastructure and vertical gardening structures.
Required Skills
Advanced knowledge and experience in planning and implementing organic raised-bed vegetable gardening techniques for the Montana climate including: plant propagation, seedling care, transplanting, weeding, watering, pruning, harvesting, and fertility management; pest control, observation, and monitoring; season extension
Advanced knowledge and experience with growing and installing Montana native plants
Knowledge of foodservice (high volume) food preparation needs and techniques
Knowledge of and skills for program planning, documentation, organization, analysis, and evaluation
Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
Effective public relation skills
Ability to organize small and large events, workshops, and demonstrations
Ability and desire to work with a diverse population including UDS culinary staff, MSU County Extension, students and student groups, children in K-12 schools, academic faculty, and the UM and Missoula communities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Proficiency with web and print research techniques
Possess active leadership and supervision skills for Student Garden Assistant and garden volunteers
Knowledge of tool and work site safety and ability to teach to others
Ability to work independently and as part of a large, diverse team
Ability to be student centered and guest focused
Ability to maintain productivity while working in a public environment interacting with students, faculty, staff, guests, and the Missoula community

Physical Requirements

Ability to carrying up to sixty (60) pounds.
Work early (before 8:00 am) and late (after 5:00 pm) hours and on weekends
Pushing and pulling motions using pallet jacks, wheeled dollies, hand trucks, and carts.
Ability to use garden and landscaping tools such as shovels, rakes, or hand tools for digging, moving prepping garden beds, and planting.
Required Experience
High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years experience in production growing including farming, gardening, and/or horticulture.
A valid Montana Driver’s license is required.
