OK, I’m new to lawn care.  Our new lawn was seeded Oct 2006.  We are in S. DE and have very sandy soil.  This spring we fertilized (after 4 3.5” cuttings) using a fertilizer with broad leaf weed killer.  The pH of our lawn is 6.0.  Now instead of using the “Scott’s” plan for fertilizing and bugs and weed control, we’d like to go organic.  We were advised to go out and buy a lot of organic matter.  So now here are my questions:  How do we put it down?  How often?  Does it need to be put down prior to a good rain – or good watering?  Does it leave an order that will annoy the neighbors?  Anything else we need to know?

I think the answer to all of your questions is "it depends!"

Organic matter may or may not contain fertilizer.

Organic matter will help your lawn and all growies that I can think of.

Do you have trees in your lawn?

Did you have an idea on which kind of organic matter you were planning on putting down?

I think that what would be easier would be to put down organic lawn fertilizer this fall.
