ok, one more question..
I was just reading on another site about using vinegar, salt and liquid detergent to spray on weeds to kill them. If I have a large patch of weeds in my yard where I want the lawn (maybe a few pathetic sprigs of grass), do you think it would be advisable to spray this weed killer on the weeds or just leave the weeds for now and be patient and wait for the grass to take over and grow in?

I once looked into some of those kinds of recipes and found a lot of them to be dangerous.
For example ... look at the salt. There are millions of acres of land where that has worked so well, that now nothing will grow there. Perhaps ever again. They can't seem to get the salt to go away no matter what they try.
Further, consider your earthworms - they don't like salt. Yet earthworms do so much to make your life easier. Do you want to run off your earthworms?
As for vinegar, yes - it can work. Of course most vinegars are diluted. Possibly to the point of not killing anything, but just being annoying. Since it is an acid - it will also run off your earthworms, but it may be a bit more temporary.
I think the best way to control weeds is to outcompete them or smother them.

I agree. thanks. I am going to avoid doing this. I didn't think about the poor earthworms! We actually have quite a few. Everytime I pull weeds up, there is often an earthworm around. So, i think our lawn has some hope yet, just need to be patient
