Don't know where to post this so I stuck it here.
Concerning the carbon/nitrogen ratio of straw vs. hay; I have to agree with Paul on this if you are discussing straw and hay that is of good quality that you can actually use.
The ratios quoted in the book would be too green and hot to use for anything except mulch. Store that stuff in a hayloft or stack it too tightly and it will catch fire at worst and and quickly become too moldy to feed or use for bedding at best.
In my experience oat straw was always greener than any other straw and I actually purchased it to feed my horses for hay - they went after it like candy. Could not keep it long though as it spoiled very quickly.
