My boyfriend and I have spent the past few months apprenticing on an organic farm in Santa Cruz, California but our time here will end in July. We have lived on-site in a small cottage, and we would love to find a similar situation that allows us to reduce rent by working on the property.
A little about our background:
We're responsible. Mid-twenties. Open-minded. Good humored.
The property we help with now is 4 planted acres, a small fruit orchard, 4 bee hives, 40 chickens, a koi pond and nearly 30 landscaped acres. The entire property is a little over 50 acres. We planted over 3000 bulbs plus many more flowers around the property. We also captured 2 wild swarms of bees this spring... that brought our hive total to 4.
My boyfriend is a recent graduate of UC Santa Cruz where he studied Sustainable Agriculture. He loves: foraging for edibles, identifying flowers and trees in the forest, permaculture design, hiking, bird-watching, and camping. He also has basic carpentry skills.
I graduated a few years ago with the intention of attending law school, however I soon realized I wanted to spend my time reconnecting with nature. I was raised on a small farm and spent my youth in the garden or chicken coupe. I have served as the main apprentice for the past few months on this small scale community garden. I want to learn so much more that what I have obtained with this experience, and I am hoping there is an opportunity out there. I love photography, foraging for edibles, reading, hiking and learning more about homesteading. I would love to learn more about preserving and cheese making.
Neither of us are necessarily the hippie type, but we're both conscious of how our decisions impact the environment. We enjoy reusing various things and getting crafty with used materials; for instance, we recently made a beautiful bookshelf with apricot crates we bought from a local farm. I'm a nerd with do-it-yourself projects.
If you know of an work-live farm apprenticeship opportunity in California, please let us know. Thank you for your time.
