Maddy Harland has been hugely inspirational within the permaculture movement. Maddy founded
Permaculture magazine 24 years ago which has seen its readership grow from 600 to over 100,000 people per issue, across 77 different countries. The magazine, and its vibrant website, offer practical solutions for self-reliance. Importantly it continues to introduce new people around the world to permaculture, connecting them to the best practices, courses and sources.

Maddy was first to edit & publish cool temperate permaculture books via the Permanent Publications imprint. The list has grown to over 40 titles now, with the world's media coming to the publisher and using them, their authors and permaculture ideas as an increasing source of material for TV, film and print features.

She also founded The Sustainability Centre in Hampshire, UK, a 55 acre site which offers an award winning Natural Burial Site, education for children and adults, wetland system, eco-hostel, yurts and tipis. The site hosts major events such as the South Downs Green Fair, Dark Mountain, Green Party Conferences and the Independent Magazine Gathering.
Maddy has appeared on mainstream TV herself in the UK, and has probably connected millions of people to permaculture in her 24 years of work. She also gets out there, introducing and inspiring people to seek out and understand permaculture via online editorials, blogs, writing for other publications and speaking at major events like the Glastonbury Festival or Grow It Yourself.
