German hugelkultur diagram

On the bedding part it's 'humus layer' firstly and then states 'sod' is just beneath that with 'tribal tree branches, roots, and shrubs' at base...

Hopefully the diagram helps with visualizing the process. I've got a German friend of a friend in Austin, TX who is incorporating several perma processes on his property and shares valuable information and media all the time..

Hauptwindrichtung = main wind direction

"Schutz" means protection -- "Schatz" means treasure... /end language fun

"Aufbau von Hügelbeeten" - Set up of Hill beds.
"Sonneneinstrahlung im Tagesverlauf" - Direct sunlight in the course of the day.
"Obstbäume als zusätzlicher Windschutz" - Fruit trees as additional windbreak.
"Hauptwindrichtung" - Prevailing wind direction.
"Humusschicht" - (in this case) Topsoil
"Rasenziegel (mit der Oberfläche nach unten)" - Gras sods (upside down)
"Unterschiedlich grobes organisches Material (Baumstämme, Äste, Wurzelwerk, Stauden, etc)" - Different kinds of coarse organic material, e.g. logs, branches, roots, dead perennials, et cetera)
"Natursteinplatten als Gehweg. Auch eine Begrünung, beispielsweise mit verschiedenen Kleearten und trittfestem Thymian, eignet sich als Ernteweg sehr gut." - You can use natural stones as walking path or different kinds of clover and (step tolerant?!) thyme. They will serve you well as pathways.

You can find that diagram in english in sepp Holtz new book.  Which i have to say was pretty underwhelming overall.

For the Deutsch speakers out there, can you let me know what they're discussing?

I believe for the most part they're inquiring on the use of 'treated' lumber, as opposed to earthy branches for Hugel beds.. I translated one of the replies and one guy discouraged him from using any chem-treated lumber,as they leech into your soil and groundwater..

Bejaflor #1: (1) Talking about the value of pine cones. Bejaflor said they are bad for the pH-number and don't rot well in the compost pile. She asked if they are any good for insects or if she should throw them in the trash can. Or continue using them for firewood.
(2) She said she collected lumber within the city for a Hugelbed á la Sepp Holzer. She found some big half rotten logs with nails in them. She asked if she could pull the nails out and use this wood for her hugelbed. She has concerns because of the heavy metals though. She said she heard that when you hammer a couple of copper nails in a tree it will die.

frank #1: Agrees with everything said in "(1)". He said "Use the pine cones for firewood".
Disagrees with the "nail-story" except the part with the living tree and the copper nails. His statement is not to use the logs because of chemicals and evaporating substances near the logs. He said she should only use untreated logs without the possibility of contamination.

bejaflor #2: Comes to the conclusion treated wood can't be used for insects at all.

frank #2: Agrees and brings in the suggestion that untreated wood for that purpose could be found in a saw mill.

bejaflor #4: Asked frank for plants. There is a list containing peach tree from seed, gooseberry, hardy kiwi, wild service tree, currant, blackberry, comfrey, borage, chervil, enchanter's nightshade, creeping jenny, common yarrow.

frank#4: No problem.


Blah blah blah! It's not a real discussion anymore! Haha.

Harmful heavy metal are lead and mercury, may be others other people would know of, iron is a usefull metal in the garden that plants often need, i have even heard from a Spanish woman that some used to put nails into the ground where they planted a plant to help the plant, a way of putting iron in the soil i suppose. I am not an expert on metal though ,i don't know if the nails or whatever object i identify as being iron could be an alloy and not just iron. rose macaskie.

Rose, There are better ways to get iron to your plants. Sequester it with plants, or an addition of kelp meal. The nail thing is silly.
