This a a tutorial on how to start your own thread. There's actually a few ways to go about this, so I'll try to show all of them.

Step
1

Pick a Forum to Post in!

We have two separate views, one for mobile users and one for desktop users. Anyone can switch between the two by scrolling to the bottom and clicking either "Desktop View" or "Mobile View."

Mobile View

In mobile view, there's a button at the top left that says "Forums." Click on that and you'll get a drop down menu of all our forums. Click the one you want to post in!

Desktop View

In Desktop View, you'll notice on the permies home page that there are a lot of links on the left sidebar. We have a lot of forums on permies, and these aren't even all of them! These are links to our "Categories" of forums. For example, the category of "Growies" has "Gardening for Beginners" and "Fruit Trees" and a whole lot more! You can find more forums by either clicking the link at the TOP of the sidebar, called Permaculture Forums or the link at the BOTTOM of the sidebar, called All Forums

If you click the TOP link (Permaculture Forums), you'll come to a page with lots of threads. On the LEFT, you'll see a bunch of catagories and their forums. These still aren't ALL of the forums we offer, but they are the most popular. Once again, scroll down to see more forums! Click on the category or forum that you're interested in!

If you clicked the BOTTOM link (All Forums), you'll come to a screen full of all of the forums we offer. Pick the one that best fits your topic. (Note, if you can't decide which to post it in because it fits in a bunch of different ones, chose one forum, make your thread, and then click the REPORT button on your first post and ask a moderator to add it to the other forums it fits in.)

Step
2

Click the Start a New Thread Button

Mobile View

The "New Topic" button is found at the bottom of your screen. Scroll past all the most recent threads in the forum, and click "New Topic." This will take you to another page where you can compose your new thread!

Desktop View

The start a new thread button can be found on a bunch of different screens. When you're looking at a thread, or at a forum, you'll notice it at the top right.

Here it is at at the Growies category (which includes a lot of forums. You can't post in Growies itself, just in one of it's forums. We'll get to that later!)

Here's the Start a New Thread button in the Gardening for Beginners forum.

Step
3

Write a Title and Message

Mobile View

You should now be able to write your subject title and your post. You can also add in any pictures you want though the attachment areas. Once you're done, click "Submit"!

Desktop View

If you clicked the Start a New Thread button on a category, rather than a forum, you'll have to select which forum you want to post in. There's a drop down menu to do so. Click on that, and select your forum. (You won't have to worry about the drop-down menu if you clicked the Start a New Thread from a forum)

Now that you've got a forum selected, write your title and your content (question, information, etc). If you have any pictures or other attachments to add, you'll see a tab under your message that says "Attachments." Click on that to add pictures or other attachments. For more information, read this tutorial How to Add Pictures

Once you're all done writing your message, you can click either "Preview" to make sure it looks good, or "Submit" to publish it. Once you click that Submit button, you're done!

.....

P.S. If you realize after you've posted that it didn't turn out quite right, you might be able to edit it. But, on permies, the edit button disappears after a set amount of hours/days (for a new poster, it's a few hours, for a veteran poster, it's after a few days, etc). This is to prevent people from going back and deleting their post after other's have replied (you'd be amazed at how often this occurs!). You might also have your edits subject to a moderators approval, even if the edit button is still available. If it's not available, and there's a really important reason to edit it, you can click "report," and we might be able to help.
