Paul has an idea.

How do you heat?  How much do you spend in a year?

Maybe we can cobble together something that smells a bit like a documentary from having three dozen people send in vids.

Needs to be cold climate.

This is an invitation for all Permies living in a cold climate:

Jump in on creating a documentary about heat!

The information needed:

  •   average temp (average high and average low) in December
  •        (example - Missoula is 33/19 - according to google)
  •   estimation of quality of insulation and square feet of your house
  •   story of heat and annual cost
  •   what sort of indoor temps do you maintain
  •   if burning wood, what are your December wood burning habits like (100% wood? Burn all day? Evening temp different than morning temp?)
  •   footage of the system in action, and maybe also of the outside during winter times

  • Paul is going to pay $50 per minute used in the final youtube video.

    About the video files:

  • The footage should be shot in landscape - horizontal - 16:9 aspect ratio.
  •     For HD that would be 1920x1080. No vertical shots please!
  • The files should be video files uncompressed.
  • Before uploading the videos, please rename the files like this:

  •    firstname-lastname-01

       for example:
       john-doe-01
       john-doe-02
       john-doe-03

This is important! If the files are not named as requested, Andrés wont be able to use the footage.

    Where to send the videos?

Please click this fancy button to send your videos to our wonderful Andrés:

Please post in this thread when you have sent the files!

    Questions? Please ask!

    Thoughts? Do tell!

Hesitating? Tell us and we will boost your confidence in to doing it!

Anyone? Participating in this wouldn't require other than a basic smart phone to shoot some video!

I will give it a try, I'm usually behind the camera not in front of it.

I did it!  I got footage with my new video camera.  It was easy!!!

But I didn't have a micro sd card in the camera so it's in the internal memory.  And I don't have a cord to connect it to my computer...  Hopefully I'll get it figured out soon :)

Is it possible to do this on my iPad. I don’t know anything about those things you’re asking for except how to name the files. I am in Northern Canada on wood heat. Very low temps.

Just seeing this now - there has been plague in the house.
Can I blather on in the videos à la, "here is the woodstove; notice all the wood piled around it in an attempt to get it dry enough to burn", "here is a candle guttering from the wind howling down from the highlands right through the walls", "here is the thermometer", etc, etc? Is that the sort of thing yer after?
Not horribly keen on being in front of the camera, but boy, can I blather!

No interest in doing a video but some data FWIW: at latitude 61 north, avg december temps were 21.6F high and 12.1F low, house is 1800 sq ft, r19 walls, r38 roof, 100% wood heat (and 90% of cooking done on stove as well), inside temps 65-70F, burned 1/2 cord of dry hardwood. Stove is secondary air style.

-29F here in Iqaluit Nunavut right now, weather being described as "Fair" lol
so the question is, if my contributions would be useful: I am living in shared accommodation and it is a subsidized townhouse, heating is subsidized diesel. I would do the video with my roommate who pays the heating bills and if there is any sort of reimbursement, i am used to living on a shoestring, so he can have the money: he has mouths to feed.
Are you constraining data to USA? Home owners?
If so are you interested in basic data simply sent on this page with no reimbursement?
    What is the deadline date?
I bet I could find out volume diesel consumption for the population as there is one distributor.
    TIA great idea

Got 1 of 3 to upload.  8 tries on the other 2.  Longer ones apparently my home internet isn't staying stable long enough so will try again from church Sunday to see if that works any better.
    Staff note (Andrés Bernal) :

I see the one! Ill keep an eye out for the other 2 thanks!

Yes pls!! The intent of the video is to show how peeps are heating rn, diesel being one of them. No geographical restriction aside from it being cold enough that it requires a heating system. No need to own the system, using it is more than enough

We want to get as much footage as we can rn that its still chilly so we can see them in action.

I think people will be interested in the data you provide regardless of this video so thats always welcomed.

    Thank you!

Files have been sent off, I hope there is something there that can be of use!

I only had to retake the video about ten times, who knew talking at a camera could get a guy so flustered. Haha

I see 6 files, thanks Timothy!

Hmm, this does sound like it might something of interest! But I think there would still be the need for video where you tell about your house and heating. Let's see if Andrés has more thoughts about this!

Did enough people submit video yet?  Cold season is thinking about winding down and this sort of footage probably seems better if it's shot in the winter...

Do you want us to share all the details in the first post in the video? Or can that be submitted in written form? I am trying to figure out how long the video should be. One of just the stove running will be short. I haven't made many videos so I am hoping to make it a useful video.
    I mean specifically

    The information needed:

average temp (average high and average low) in December
(example - Missoula is 33/19 - according to google)
estimation of quality of insulation and square feet of your house
story of heat and annual cost
what sort of indoor temps do you maintain
if burning wood, what are your December wood burning habits like (100% wood? Burn all day? Evening temp different than morning temp?)
footage of the system in action, and maybe also of the outside during winter times

Its better if we have video of you stating this info and explaining your experience rather than written pls. Its always easier to cut out rather than to add missing bits :)

It looks like the videos I set to upload overnight went through from my end.  Hopefully they really did arrive intact.  I don't know if they will be useful or not as unfortunately that is the best camera I have.  It's a piece of crap for shooting video though it said it was 1080.  If you'd like something else or want me to reshoot something just let me know.  I'm realizing in hindsight I probably should have filmed me loading more wood into the RMH after showing it burned down and saying it was time to add more wood.

I'm in a cold climate, but last December was a major heat wave, so I can't post an average temperature.  I'm still running the original gas furnace while I explore the options.  I'd like to try a wood stove with a pressurized firebox.  It would be a solid-fuel gas turbine, with the efficiency proportional to the heat resistance of the exhaust turbine, as usual.  To get just a bit of electricity as a by-product of heating only low pressures and common materials would be needed.
To get me to build a rocket mass heater instead, you'd have to show some theory about how other wood heaters waste so much.  That big new chart is lovely, but lacks that bit for credibility.  I think it would also be a lot easier to read with a couple more rows and columns of labels, so there's always one of each on screen as I scroll around.
