This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Commerce.

Perform some sort of labor over the internet and get paid at least $500.

  • A description of your labor
  • A picture of proof that the labor was done over the internet
  • A picture of proof it made you at least $500 (you can smudge the personal info, as long as it is identifiable as yours)

  • Clarifications:
  • Using the internet to sell your "goods" isn't a fit for this BB

I started last summer to work as freelancer at upwork.com

For historical research, I read the biographies of all German Members of Parlament since 1918 to 1933, original in German.
    On this internet page. http://zhsf.gesis.org/biorabwr_db/biorabwr_db.php
And got the most important information noted in English.

While reading each biography I was taking information about 12 items, for example, nobility, education, did person owned land, business,  took a part in war, what they did during and after WW2 etc...
Then I entered that information in Excel spreadsheet, so created structure matrix  of  4000 rows X 12 columns of information.
I was slow at beginning but then a become very good, doing a biography in 3 minutes, I was like robot.
A friend helped me by making a greasemoneky makro, so that text of biography is easier to read,
like spacing between the lines, making some words bold etc.

I think jobs like this could be rare. Especially since already now, since  they could be easally autuomatised .  Pprogrammer (who speaks German), who can scrape this information from a web page and  automatize this demanding job. After doing this job I learned basic scraping in python with beautiful soup, well not much but one script, to srcape information about education from that website..
I have on to do list to learn to program in python…

Since I live in the not first world country that was indeed very good paid job. (first 11$ then 15$ an hour)
If I had this Job just few weeks before, for sure I would support the greenhouse kickstarter at 100$ level.
I bought the The Better World Book (well my own copy to cherish) from the money I earned on this job and some pie.
I never thought I will work for that University in my life.

    I'm applying for this BB.

I normally run in in-person craft fair in December every year, but in 2020 that couldn't happen so I organized an online craft fair for local vendors instead. I had about 30 vendors at $CAD25 each, so income was about US$575.

Web site for the craft fair, showing vendors:
    http://prcraftfairs.com/vendor-list/

Facebook page for the craft fair:
    https://www.facebook.com/pronlinecraftfair

Incoming vendor fees to bank account and Paypal account (all in CAD$):
    http://kevinrwilson.ca/income-for-permies/
(page is password-protected, pw is cranberry)

All work on this was done over the internet. Income above does not reflect me selling any goods.

That’s very weird, I just tested again and the pw does work. Make sure it’s all lower case? I put the info on that page because the screenshot of the bank transactions is huge.

I did a project for a tech company that specializes in smart devices. I obtained a web connected air quality sensor, integrated it with their product, and then wrote a blog post about what I accomplished. Link to blog

I work online as a freelance website developer AND my day job, as a developer/consultant is 100% remote (over the Internet), partially thanks for COVID. My head office, which only a few senior colleagues now use, is based several hundred miles away in the east of England whereas I live in south Wales.

I am applying for this BB based on my regular day job. I work "full time" (37.5 hours per week) and use the second [tiny] bedroom in my house as an office. It's also a craft space so, if you look carefully in the photo of the space that I've attached, you might see some axes that I have recently restored. The desk is also usually half-full of leather projects.

Day-to-day we use Microsoft Teams to co-ordinate work and to host video meetings. I probably spend more time in meetings than I did when working face-to-face but the lack of commute it worth it. I used drive 50 miles per day and hated the carbon footprint of it. It's also nice to be able to see my partner and my dog during the working day, to tend the garden if necessary, pick veggies or salad leaves for lunch and, of course, do the laundry in the background.

Edit: I've decided to describe the work I do a bit more, in place of "picture proof of the work". I typically build and manage client relations for apps that they want to build. I specialise in JavaScript and day-to-day I'm working on the low-code platform created by our company. I have recently built a Progressive Web App project using React for a client. Previously I was working on our cloud architecture in AWS.

Edit 2: I attached a screenshot of a meeting I was having. People and any project names redacted.

I'm not sure exactly how to prove the working situation. On the payslip it shows my name (as identification) and also a "Work home allowance". The latter is a salary top-up that is supposed to cover our Internet costs and any additional electricity costs; it was added when the company closed the office (following several months of lockdown) and made the decision that all of the employees (except a very few senior colleagues) will be working remotely full-time. Note that, due to living remotely from the office, I was already doing so.

I have attached an email showing the initial announcement for of the office closure but I don't have one showing that this is now permanent as it was announced in a video meeting. Hopefully the description and the images that I have provided will be enough to demonstrate this.

The payslip is in GBP and the value is above $500.

Description of labor: Redesigning and developing a website for Rhonda, a music teacher in Arizona. I built the site from the ground up, wrote the content from the outlines she gave me, integrated an ecommerce system so she could sell her music and online courses, and put one of the courses up onto the site.

Proof that the labor was done over the internet: It's website design, kinda hard to not do over the internet. (Plus she lives in Arizona and I live in Indiana, so it would have been hard for us to work together without doing the labor over the internet.) I've included a screenshot of part of the homepage, if that counts.

Proof that I've made at least $500: I've included a screenshot of my invoicing software, showing over $500 in payments received from her over the course of this project, plus a dropdown showing the account is mine.

    Hello!
I design food forest gardens for people remotely. Payment is sent via Zelle to my bank, and is about $250 per design. I was paid $500 for a larger design.

Hey! Not sure if this counts for both the straw and sand badges at the same time -- happy to post it over in the sand badge too if needed :)

I'm a web developer by trade specializing in WordPress and frontend/CSS, and have worked remote all over the world since 2012. These days with baby about to be here so soon I'm looking to spend more time on non-techy projects and hope to build up a stream of passive income, but if our family was ever in a pinch I could easily hop back online and pick up where I left off.

I've attached a screenshot of my Upwork profile, let me know if that's not enough!

I helped with the design and drew up the as built plans for the first WOFATI Greenhouse.  You can buy the plans on the Permies Digital Marketplace!  I did the design work from my home in Seattle and was sent as built dimensions as they built it.  Some guy named Paul paid me big bucks to do it.

I teach English as a Second Language online and I love it! I quit my full time job 3 years ago to teach online. I love the flexibility and connecting with my students in another culture. Most of my students are in China, although I have had some from other countries such as Russia.

I teach in the early mornings. I have an attached picture of my schedule for next week. Sometimes I open earlier slots and start teaching at 5:50 or 6:30 am. I mostly teach 1v1 classes which is 1 student per class. Occasionally I have 1v4 classes which is 4 students per class.

I obtained an ESL certification in June 2020 which is a requirement to teach for this company. I would highly recommend the company I teach for!

Ugh, okay. This one is going to be harder to gather the info because I did writing and book editing work on Upwork for several clients. Upwork charges an exorbitant fee out of your earnings, so after awhile I deleted my account. Therefore I can't just go back in and screenshot my contracts. I did, however, get emails from my clients. Let's see if I can get sufficient information that way. I have a skill set that allows me to work for clients in writing, editing, book and cover design that I can use to bring in enough income to pay the bills and put food on the table, but it isn't my current "go to" gig.

A description of your labor: Writing articles and interior book design
A picture of proof that the labor was done over the internet:

A picture of proof it made you at least $500 (you can smudge the personal info, as long as it is identifiable as yours): If you total up all of the gigs, posted in step 2, you'll see it comes to $760, which is more than $500, so I think I got this one in the bag.

This counts for Sand and Straw badges, right?

My position is leading operations for a decentralized community, I.E. one that is not all in the same place: the definition of a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization)

I'm leaving the states visible so that you can see that mine and the company's are different. That it was non-employee compensation shows it was services, not goods.

This is where I work -- no business would let my desk look like this...and why is there a tub and shower in there?!?

    Hello PEP-folks,
[EDITED to add the deposit sheet from my bank, which shows the payment less the Quickbooks cut. It also shows payment timelines in self-employment...sigh.]
I believe this qualifies, though the work was done a little while ago. I'm a licensed PE in Arizona, and this client brought me a novel house design to perform a structural-engineering check on the original Mexico City structural engineers at key points on the design. I worked this completely remotely, and prepared a report for him to submit to our county as a sort of cover letter for the Mexico City work product (as their credentials are not recognized in the US). The work has been redacted for privacy, but was prepared for public records, so I believe everything is on the up-and-up to share it. Did not have to leave home, earned $1500 practicing my profession. I hope I have captured the intent of the badge, moreover, the structure itself uses some interesting alternative materials, though really cement-heavy.
(St Innocent Construction is/was my construction LLC - still exists, but not active. You can see my name on the PE stamp.)
    Happy homestead-engineering!
    Mark

Why should I lose weight? They make bigger overalls. And they sure don't make overalls for tiny ads:
