This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in tool care.

Sharpen three knives.

There are many youtube videos on the process so watch a few before you get started.

Requirements to complete:
 - sharpen three knives
 - must be sharpened with a whetstone (or more than one)
 - sharpen secondary edge as well as primary edge
 - hone
 - test before and after with cutting paper

To get certified for this BB, post pics showing, for three knives:

  - closeup of pic of the dull edge OR pic of the dull knife raggedly cutting through a piece of paper
  - action pic of sharpening
  - pic of the sharp knife having cut halfway through a piece of paper

Here is my submission for the Tool Care - Straw - Sharpen Three More Knives BB.

I pulled out six knives to get some practice after watching the Knife Sharpener video.  He inspired me to spend more time on each knife than I probably ever have.
K1 Chicago Cutlery paring knife - sharpened for sand bb
K2 Chicago Cutlery utility knife
K3 Chicago Cutlery chef knife
K4 sister's chef knife with plastic and rubber handle
K5 sister's paring knife - never did get sharp - decided to throw it out
K6 folding knife - decided not to sharpen

I did make several passes on the secondary edge of each knife before focusing on the primary edge, then finished on a steel.
Also, I used water and dr. Bronner's soap to wet and clean the stone.  I did not use the whetstone oil that came with my stone but have used the oil in the past.  Each side of the whetstone a different "grit" - coarse and fine.

To get certified for this BB, post pics for three knives:
 - closeup of pic of the dull edge OR pic of the dull knife raggedly cutting through a piece of paper
 - action pic of sharpening
 - pic of the sharp knife having cut halfway through a piece of paper

K2 Utility Knife

K3 Chicago Cutlery Chef Knife

K4 Chef Knife

(I'm holding the paper for the photo - I did not hold it like that while testing knife's ability to cut the paper)

the pan of water to rinse the stone - a drop or two of Dr Bronner's
Staff note (Mike Barkley) :

I certify this BB is complete.

The knives were in pretty good shape but all three failed the paper cut test. I sharpened both sides using a 1000 and 3000 grit stone.

I sharpened two of the carving knives inherited from my Grandpa and one whittling knife.

I used three different stones, plus unglazed ceramic on all three blades. I now plan to use them for some of the woodworking badge bits! My Grandpa was the barefoot son of cotton sharecroppers, and he dreamed for years of finding acres of his own out there somewhere. He experimented with all kinds of projects like the ones I'm learning about on Permies: rabbit-raising, vermiculture, leatherworking, and so on. I hope to honor him in all my SKIP endeavors, but especially in caring for his tools.

Some knives I've sharpened recently. One is my whittling knife. The next is a cut-throat razor which had gotten a bit dull for shaving. That one is tricky due to the blade profile, but I got it razor-sharp in the end! The final one is a kitchen knife belonging to an acquaintance of mine. It was so dull it's before cut was less than 1mm into the paper! She was unaware that her knives were so dull, so I may be sharpening the rest in future as part of a barter.

It was time for me to sharpen the knives in my kitchen as they all failed the paper test. I used a whetstone that I soaked for a couple of minutes before.

I utilized a coarse/fine whetstone that I had soaked prior. All the knives sharpened well, I was worried about the railroad spike but the edge came out just fine

More knives sharpened… both whetstone and hone. I ripped some magazine paper out of a car parts catalog, so the paper doesn’t look as crisp on the final cuts as it would with printer paper, but I didn’t want to use up a nice piece of paper!
