This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in tool care.

Sawmills are a much better way of making lumber than using a hand saw.  But they work better when their blade is sharp.  Let's sharpen a sawmill blade!

Here's a guy sharpening a bandsaw blade:

And another fellow sharpening a circular saw blade:

To get certified for this BB, post photos or a two minute video of:

 - close up of edge of dull blade
 - mid-process with all sharpening equipment used
 - close up of the sharpened blade

Here i am sharpening the sawmill. I usually sharpen the teeth on the blade a few times before i remove them. And than take them to the bench grinder to get them nice again.

Here is the saw blade, it has 6 teeth. They are all removable.

Dull tooth

Tools i use, One is a dremel, another is a small 500w inverter. and a 12v battery.

I sharpened the sawmill blade today. It is a Lucas 830 swing blade. I love this mill.  Easy to operate and easy to maintain. Fewer moving parts than with a bandsaw mill, makes better chips for bedding and mulch than the dust from a bandsaw mill, can saw much larger diameter logs, blade doesn't wander with the wood grain, get a board with every pass without ever having to move the log, and best of all it is easier to sharpen the blade with only five teeth. Here is a less than 2 minute video of me sharpening the blade that wasn't edited or sped up.

I borrowed my buddy's Lucas swing blade sawmill and that thing is pretty sweet!  I'm cutting up three big white pines, the biggest was 37" diameter at the fat end.  She was cutting a bit slow so I sharpened the teeth.  A couple teeth have little chips out of them so there must have been some grit in the bark :(  I didn't grind them down until the chips were gone, I just sharpened them until the unchipped parts were sharp.
