Open Shell Farm, Bandipur, India
Instructors: Rico Zook & Malvikaa Solanki

This course is both for those who want a general though comprehensive introduction to sustainability and how to create it, as well as those wishing to get a complete and in-depth introduction to permaculture, all its component elements, and the process and methodologies for creating a holistic permaculture design. Our focus is to really imprint the foundations and understandings so that students are able to think through to understand what is needed, than how to adapt and do the needfuls for their specific situation and site conditions. A basic understanding of regenerative systems is that every site is unique; therefore every application of Permaculture must be site-specific. So, while we will give many different ideas and system examples, it is the ability to adapt these to specific site conditions, including cultural, social and economic ones, which will truly make something regenerative, i.e. sustainable.

Join us for this 16-day immerse journey at Open Shell Farm. A demonstration experimental site for regenerative living as we explore Permaculture through traditional lectures, learning exercises, discussions, multimedia, walkabouts, design challenges, and immersive hands-on projects. Open Shell is a working farm with many installed permaculture/regenerative systems, so there will be many good expamples, as well as engaement with adding to Open Shell's regenerative systems.

Located in 1,000's of acres of organic forest garden cultivated by 467 family farmer cooperative, his course is the longest running annual PDC in Asia. In this course we focus on the foundations and understandings of regenerative systems so that students are able to think through to understand what is needed, than how to adapt and do the needfuls for their specific situation and site conditions. This course seeds a holistic designer's perspective into the student’s consciousness.

Using a variety of learning techniques and strategies this course presents Permaculture as an integrated holistic design approach to create sustainable human habitat. Course time will consist of traditional lectures, guest presentations, group discussions, games, exercises, hands-on projects, photos, movies and site visits. While we will focus on land systems, many discussions and examples will be explored of applications in the 'Invisible Structures'. These are the social, cultural, political, and economic structures we create as humans that powerfully shape much of our world today.
Not only will the course be about Permaculture, but it will also model it by its structure and the environment we create together during the course.

This course is both for those who want a general but comprehensive introduction to sustainability and how to create it, as well as those wishing to get a complete and in depth introduction to permaculture, all its component elements, and the process and methodologies for creating a holistic permaculture design. It is especially beneficial for farmers, ranchers, all types of agriculturalist, architects, urban planners, engineers, resource managers, and anyone else who works with our physical world or does design work in its many forms. However, one does not need to be going into a permaculture career or a related field to benefit from this learning. Many artists, medical professionals, business people, housewives, and others have gained insights and understandings that have enabled them to both increase their quality of life, as well as move all their endeavors towards creating a more sustainable world.

Using a variety of learning techniques and strategies this course presents Permaculture as an integrated design approach to create sustainable human habitat.

This Permaculture course is being held on a beautiful site nestled in a valley, located 3 hours from Bangalore. The Timbaktu Kutumbam Foundation Trust (TKF) was formed in the year 2009, with the aim of regenerating a piece of land and begin organic farming. The 100 acres of land has over the years come to be called 'Kailasam', named informally after the Sri Kailasam temple located at the far end of the site. The farm at present is growing millets, fruits trees and vegetables, and there is an on-going effort to regenerate and revitalize the land, by improving soil fertility, increasing water availability, and introducing local indigenous varieties of forest trees . Experiments are also being done on Biodynamic Farming methods. Permaculture was introduced to the farm quite recently and so Kailasam is in the beginning stages of Permaculture design & implementation.

We are excited to host a Permaculture Design Certificate Course being taught by EIGHT other certified Instructors from India and Sri Lanka with support by Rico Zook, who will also present. This is a one of kind PDC, with multiple teachers from varied parts of India, coming together to support, teach and learn together with our participants. Each of the teachers is an upcoming Indian Permaculture instructor and practitioner and it is our privilege to host such a unique course in Kailasam. Many of these people are already building successful permaculture practices, from consulting to designing to implementing a wide variety of projects.
