Thanks for all these replies, lots to think about.

This is great post and I’m glad it was revived.

It does seem from my observations that many attempts to start an intentional community, Transition Town etc start strong then fall apart from some internal conflict.

Figuring this out is paramount to moving forward in any way. I certainly have not been able to personally but if any group can do it, it would be permies.

Thank you

I am so happy to see this post!! I think so many are going through this, especially Permie folks.

I can only speak of my own experience. I live in Greenwood Lake NY and was compulsively driven to find a solution!(whatever that means). My solution was and is to create a local food system. I had no idea how to create this so I just decided to contact people I feel would be like minded and called a meeting, a few of my friends showed up.

To make a long story short 3 years later and dozens of empty meetings and events where 2 people showed up here I am. I was driven by a compulsion and strong belief.

Now we have a non profit with a board, Facebook page, Zoom Garden Plot, and a community garden. I’m just saying start with a vision and belief, really study your neighborhood, listen and talk with as many people as you could and stick with it.

Welcome Zach, I look forward to reading your book. I am working with others in Greenwood Lake NY to create a regenerative local food system, I believe this is a solution to many of the issues we are facing today.

I feel we could make this change relatively fast but many argue this change to a small scale local system will take decades, what is your opinion?

Great idea!

On a separate subject, what are your thoughts about heat pumps.

Thanks, just to clarify, you feel it is better to insulate the floor of the attic than to cover the ceiling. Does cellulose have any downside?

I had a question about what insulation is recommended for attics. Spray foam or  cellulose or fiberglass? Layer on the attic floor or spray on attic walls and ceiling?

I have read online and various opinions.

Simon brings up a great point, there are many problems , mostly a mind set, every bit of marketing is geared towards us not growing our own food. Emphasizing how hard it is, we could never grow enough, etc.

People would rather shop at a super market and are scared of becoming a "farmer". We used to all grow organic, local food 100  years ago. I am focusing on people growing food in their backyards, I'm thinking of running a Victory garden contest, try to bring back memories of the old days. An organization that really impresses me is Fleetfarming.org. They make it very easy to grow food, they give consultations, build the raised beds, bring the compost, plant the plants and set up watering, all for very little or free. They also use some of these plots called Fleetlettes to share surplus and sell that to restaurants and farmers markets. I hope to copy that idea.

I am hoping to really move forward next year and focus on education this year. My main focus is on making it fun and easy. I will keep you posted how it goes. We are called Grow Local Greenwood Lake.

That's great, always lead by example. I always say to myself, first me, then my family, then the community, then the world.

I think many, many people are interested in growing food and local food we just need to connect the dots. When we have enough people a tipping point will occur.

I just set up a table at my village street fair and got 30 names! I don't know where this will go exactly but I feel compelled to move ahead. I feel Permies will be one of the people leading the change.
