Hello Everyone,

I just thought I'd share an amazing opportunity I discovered this morning on Reddit:

https://web.uri.edu/mastergardener/files/2019_Seed_Order_Form.pdf

Just fill out the form, include a check for the cost of return postage, and the University of Rhode Island will send you free seeds to grow in your own yard! Deadline to send form is January 18th.

I'm going to fill it out, send it, and we'll see what happens next!

Just for fun - if you're gonna order, share what you order on this thread so we can all pre-celebrate our (hopefully bountiful) harvest together!

Okay, I made my choices:

Radish
Carrot
Turnips
Parsnips
Nasturtium
Amaranth
Tarragon
Leek
Beans(not sure what kind, that'll be part of the fun)
Summer/Winter Squash

I wish there were some tree/bush seeds available, and more perennials, but I understand that's not their mission - they're more geared to the gardening for beginners/teaching classic gardening.

Hi Dustin,

Good catch!  Thanks for the heads up.  I will be placing my order tomorrow.

I'm curious as to the variety of seeds they send. Say, it you get 5 packets of tomatoes, what would you end up with? Would you get different varieties? Sizes? It's really not a lot of money to have them shipped, if you're not picky about the varieties.

Thanks for posting it, I'll mull it over for a few days. Please update the post with what you get once it arrives!

Hello Dem,

Based on what I've read, in your example it seems you will get 5 random packets of retail Burpee Tomato seeds from the previous year's stocks that did not sell.  Because these are "expired," I would imagine there is no germination guarantee (but the chances of them germinating are still very good).

Like you said, it's so little money I'm willing to take my chances.

I just sent out the order form(kept forgetting to get out the checkbook for the return postage).

Will post back when I get the seeds, should be after the Jan 18th order deadline, sometime late Jan, Early Feb.

Any news on this front? I sent in a seed request myself and have not heard back.

I have not received anything yet, but I had not sent my request out until January 13th, so I figured my seeds will not be going out till the last requests.  I am hoping to be seeing them in the next week.

We beggars must be patient, LOL!

I have not received my package either, bummer!

I just looked on the website and it answers many questions, but not when the mail orders will be shipped out.

I'm going to keep waiting, but who knows when they will actually arrive.

I mailed in an order form for some seeds in mid-January, maybe around January 11th, and have not heard back yet either. I will update if I ever get any seeds.

Has anyone received seeds?  We are now at the point when it looks as though this may in fact be one of those Nigerian or West African seed scams.  I haven't checked to see if my check has been cashed as yet, but from the dates listed on the order form, they should have all been received by now.  oh well.....  I hope I am wrong, but everyday that clicks by with no seeds seem to now point this way.

From their Facebook page:

Thanks to all who submitted and received orders this year. The program has ended and will resume in December 2019. We were unable to fill all the orders we received, so if you have not received correspondence from us or the order you requested, please keep your eye out for mail from us that'll include you check or money order! Happy growing, all!

I received a polite reply in the mail with my check included. They had more requests than supply and chose to ration out the seeds primarily to first time gardeners or folks who would not otherwise be able to afford to garden.

Thank you Anne.  I was guessing that something like that had happened. Glad to hear that some have received their check back.  It was fun to joke about it though.  ;-)

Sincerely,

Ralph
