What produces in what USDA zone?

First I want to say hi been a long time snooper but first time posting. I live in Zone 5b just south of Lake Michigan in Indiana. And I have been trying to grow as many diverse perennials as possible. But I have a hard time finding list of what rare stuff grows in this area. When ever I look up food forest or permaculture it mostly gears toward warm climates. And even when it is temperate it seems to be zone 6 and warmer. I was thinking is there a way we can set up USDA zone numbering with plants that will grow and produce in each area. So maybe a forum under growies that is zone 1 zone 2 ect.... I think it would be helpful and people could list what they where able to grow in there area. Thanks ahead of time.
And if you can think of some rare fruit or perennial that will grow in my area let me know.
