This took a huge amount of work, but it is now done. Along the way, the dvd case stuff was improved.

Please take a look at my page:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00FBXAFQA/rs12-20

Hopefully, somebody that has been thinking about buying the 4-dvd set will purchase it. Mostly so I can learn how all this works.

Is it set up okay? Notice any oddities?

Bought it! Supposed to get here by the weekend - looks like a marathon to me! Paul, make sure you encourage everyone to leave reviews, they'll help you get more visibility on the Amazon site.

It works!

observation in case of use. My Amazon acct has a CDN default address for forwarding by family, (actual address is feasibly undeliverable), and Amazon says product cannot be shipped there.

We are not able to ship this item to your default shipping address.
Sold by paul wheaton and Fulfilled by Amazon. Gift-wrap available.

Were you meaning to exclude Canadian orders?

Cheers

I wonder if the "Free Shipping" is screwing it up.
The free shipping only applies to the 50 U.S. states.

If that box gets checked during checkout, it could cancel the order if the shipping address is non-US.
Does CA have a Canadian site? If so, try to get it on that site as well.

Do contact Amazon - they really do want to sell things anywhere they can.
They must have a solution.

I have waited to buy the DVD set and tried today. Got an error message saying it would not deliver to Czech Republic, I guess similar to the Canadian. Then I went to Richsoil and tried to buy it there and the problem is that I need to use a C/O on my mail. To get that I had to put the C/O in my name and in the billing there is no place for my name so the bank kicked it back because my card does not have a C/O on the account. Funny modern problems.

Okay, I asked amazon and they told me about international stuff. So I poked some buttons and I think it is now going to be available for international stuff sometime within the next two days.

Looks like it's working already!

They do stick a shipping charge on for international orders, but it's not excessive.

I love to tinker and build stuff so I will get this once I have saved up the funds. Something to keep in mind for the future, break up the DVD sets so that people can buy them piece meal or if they buy all 4 at once they get a discount.

I will buy them either through Jack Spirko (I am a MSB Member) or Steven Harris (loved his battery vids). I usually by a book or video a month on some related topic and the rest of my blow money gets saved or spent on Food Storage or something like that.

I found that I can buy them 1 DVD at a time from Ernie and Erica (found out on their website). I may spend more that way but I got to make other purchases each month.

$35 for any one DVD
$110 for the full set (4 DVDs)
includes shipping and handling.

So, what do I do to optimize my amazon selling experience? I'm guessing that if I do a thus-and-so amazon thing, more people will find out about the dvds. ??

I would love to see a download version of this. I prefer to save it on $1 worth of hard drive space than keep track of 4 plastic disc's

Download version would be nice, lowers TCO because no shipping cost, no physical production cost of the DVD and could put more money in your pocket Paul. I used to pay $30-$40 for some training DVD's, the company has been converting them to downloadable and they have cut the price to $10. Do the math to see if it is a win-win. Its the same story for authors...do I make a print version or just go straight to ebook.

Hi Paul, have you considered breaking the dvd up into 4 individually purchased sections? Each could be sold for a price which would be appropriate for a christmas or birthday present. (The greater the # of products you have listed, the higher # of sales supposedly). Also, it could give people exposure to the dvds without having to spend $100 right off the bat. Another idea once you start selling more of the dvds is to do FBA (fulfillment by amazon)- you send them in to amazon and then prime members can get free 2-day shipping.
One other helpful hint is that you can add html into the product description on amazon (for example you can add <br> page breaks so that you can create a list of points)...basically so that the description is not one large paragraph. Sometimes I think this is easier for people to read/ascertain what the product is about.

Amazon does have some sort of download option. I tried to get to it via createspace (which would also set us up for one dvd at a time). One horrible-ness of that was that amazon would then take about 70% instead of taking only 30% (which they do with FBA). And vimeo takes only 10%. But the real show stopper is that we sent them DVDs and they compained that there was a file on the DVDs that they didn't like. We could find no mention anywhere that they would not like this file. And further, we have no idea what the file is or where it came from. So we sent them the same DVDs without that file and a month later they say these are unacceptable also.

The next thing is: for the kickstarter we had 770 buyers of the 4-dvd set and just a few dozen for individual copies. So I think it is fair to say that for every single dvd we sell, we will probably sell 20 of the 4-dvd set. And the amount of work to get the singles moving is ending up being rather large.

So I am still open to the idea of getting this in some sort of streaming/download thing on amazon, but I am beginning to feel like the only path for that is "createspace" where they take 70% to 80%. In which case, I think I'll just stick with vimeo.

Yes, Ernie and Erica have several copies of the individual DVDs. I think 20 of each. So they are a source for one-at-a-time purchases!

FBA: this is what i am currently using at amazon. I will probably put the permaculture playing cards through this channel also. I guess that is the #1 thing that this thread is about: please help me learn how to make FBA sing for me!

for example you can add
page breaks so that you can create a list of points

Great tip! Apple for you!

Is there a page somewhere that details what html I can use?

Interesting experience by Louis CK when he made his content available via download with ho DRM or other restrictions.

https://buy.louisck.net/news/another-statement-from-louis-c-k

Of course your price point might have to be different from his, but I'm not asking for a download version to save money. With the price of HD space so low I just don't want to deal with the physical media any more.

Oh thanks! That was my first post on the forum too

For our business, I've found amazon buyers to be a little different than our typical customers- we're still trying to figure them out For example, most of our products are cheaper on our regular site (to offset amazon fees), yet people still buy certain products almost exclusively on amazon. We don't get much traffic from amazon--> our site (Amazon's design I think intentionally makes this difficult). When comparing kickstarter vs. amazon, there probably would be more "newbies" coming to your product via Amazon (people who have never heard of rocket mass heaters etc.), while many supporters of kickstarter may have been coming from permies.com (and thus already dedicated to the idea of rocket mass heater and willing to buy the entire set at once). Who knows, we've mostly been experimenting and trying different products by trial/error. Since listings are free on amazon, you could always try posting the individual dvds and see what happens. (What we usually do, is fulfill orders ourselves at first. Then, if a product is really successful we'll switch over to FBA).

I've used <p> and <br /> tags before, I would assume that you could create a link as well (although I'm pretty sure this is against Amazon's terms and conditions). I don't have a link to a resource page- I just figured this out on my own since I wanted my information to be listed instead of in paragraph-form.

On sending the DVDs to other countries- it might be good to see which regions are the same as ours. Otherwise the DVDs might not work! That would be sad! I don't know much about setting up websites for digital purchases, but I'm sure there must be some info on it out there. I see Ernie and Erica's website is through google sites- they may even have a way to do digital products.

I do not like Amazon.
They are like the seeds' big companies:
(I do not mention any name... You know.. The "bigs" that make it more and more difficult to grow from your seeds and make you believe they want to do good)
They little by little make a monopole....................

And they use the same trick as all those "bigs"
They give us some treats from time to time.

So yes they give you something, which means they get much more.
Which also means they kill some businesses while they mostly show that they help some businesses...
They also make prices go up, so that sellers can afford the costs!!!
As prices go up, then they make more and more people buy from them... at the price that used to be the correct price... Very clever They meke you feel you save money while this is not true.
