We're trying something new to allow people who live outside of the US to purchase permies digital market stuff. Yay!

These our our current threads set up for Non-US permies (note: I'll try to keep this updated as we get more threads rolled out!):

  • Building a Better World - ebook
  • Buidling a Better World - Audiobook (m4b)
  • Building a Better World - Audiobook (mp3/zip)
  • Care and Feeding of a Rocket Mass Heater
  • 4 DVD Better Wood Heat, Streaming
  • 8 DVD Better Wood Heat, Streaming
  • Rocket Oven, streaming
  • World Domination Gardening, Streaming
  • World Domination Gardening DVD1: PONDS, streaming
  • 6 Ways to Keep Chickens

  • If you end up purchasing through gumroads, would you be able to please leave a review there? Thank you!

And, if there is no VAT in your country, you should be able to purchase ANY of the digital market threads here on permies! Just pick any digital market thread and click the option that says your country is not subject to VAT.

If you* would like to help to test it, here's how: (*those of you who live outside of the US)

I'll hand out slices of pie to the first few people who test it and post screenshots of the process!

Here's what we need your help with: You can pick any of the above threads and go ahead and purchase them! Here's how:

-- First click HERE to go to our digital market page for the Permaculture Playing Cards

-- Then say that you are not a US resident.

-- Then say that VAT applies in your country (or that you don't know if it applies).

-- You'll then be directed to a website called Gumroad. You'll spot the price is just $1 for the permaculture cards. Go ahead and purchase it, and you should be able to download it there at Gumroad.

-- Come back here to report how it went for a slice of pie--more pie if you can get screenshots of the whole process!

    Thank you!!!

People in the US should just be taken directly to paypal for $3.50.  That is normal.  We don't need to test that part.

People outside the US should see a different path.  First the thing about being a us resident and then it will say something about going to another site for non-us people.  Then you should see the gumroad page.

After clicking to buy the first prompt comes up then when you say no the second one comes up, after that there is a new site with a big blerb about the cards (wouldn't fit on my screen) and a I want this button. that goes to the payment which added 25% VAT which is the correct rate.

Would it be better if I put a shorter blurb on the Gumroad site, so it's easier to find the "I want this" button?

I'm not sure it was needed as I had already clicked buy on here, but if it links from elsewhere? It was easy enough to find the big green button as I automatically scrolled down.

Hopefully this info is helpful in some way:

I attempted to buy the cards as a gift per the instructions in the OP, but I was not getting any screen asking if I'm a US resident or not - I was getting taken directly to Paypal.

tried a bunch of tests and fiddling with stuff

Eventually, I figured out that it's because I backed a kickstarter and so I can download the cards directly from permies already. However, this still doesn't change the fact that I can currently click on the $3.50 gift button, and that I am taken directly to Paypal without seeing any message about residency. (I'm pretty sure I should still get the message despite the kickstarter freebie, because if I did buy it as a gift, it'd likely be used outside of the US)

However, if I log out and try to buy the cards, everything acts as it should and I get the message asking if I'm a US resident, select "No", and get taken to gumroad.

This one is not set up (yet) with the non-US solution, but it is sporting some changes for the items that have not yet been set up.   If somebody could go through the steps and share screen shots of being rejected, that would be helpful:  https://permies.com/w/cob-style-rmh

    Alright so did the testing!

Everything looks good, correct tax implemented ($0 in Ontario, Canada)

Smooth checkout process, was able to create a gumroad account by simply providing a password at the end of the checkout, and have access to the things from gumroad!

Definitely a great solution. And thanks for the cards for $1!

If there are any questions or other things to test let me know.

So I tested this one as well, it actually went through, so I've got access to the stuff and paid with paypal onetouch. Didn't think it would go through, but I'm interested in learning how to build a RMH anyways, so I'll take it.

Pretty smooth process overall, it's nice to bypass gumdrop and have access on permies.com

Ok so went for the upgrade to the 8 DVD streaming set... when I clicked upgrade it didn't prompt me with the "would your purchase require permies to pay VAT/GST?" question, and instead went straight to paypal... all looks good!

    Thanks again for the implementation!
