The cob oven plan includes a photo page, 3 pages of diagrams, and 12 pages of step-by-step detail on how to design, build, and operate an earthen oven with chimney. Companion reading might include Kiko Denzers' Earthen Ovens book, but our plans can also stand alone (provided you take the time to test your cob before building).

Our rocket stove / rocket mass heater plans are designed to make it easy to lay out a proven design, and/or start a conversation with land-mates or local building experts about the heater you want to build. They include an 11x17 as-built drawing with detailed floor plan, section views, and elevations; a separate page with photos, construction details, and materials cutaway views; and a full page (11x17) of builders' notes including common errors and relevant ASTM standards. The level of detail does not go into cob testing and so on; it assumes some experience, and recommends reading the Rocket Mass Heaters book for the basic explanations.

...We have two rocket mass heater plans ready for purchase now, a 6" system on slab floor, and an 8" system over reinforced wood floor, with air channels that are rather spiffy. The next plans in the queue will be a greenhouse heater, and then our big-heat, small-footprint 8" system that we're currently enjoying in our mountain cabin.

We just don't seem to produce any time in excess of what we can use, here. More the reverse. You might see if you can find some under-valued from a bored teenager eager to grow up...

In fact, that might be a good paragraph to add at the top - that "efficient" isn't always what it's cracked up to be. There was a good bit on this in your epic two hour plus podcast with Ernie and Erica, that you could reuse some words from.

Speaking of that page, I watched the video of the cob oven and was noticed that whilst Ernie had a pipe, it was also smoke free! I assume it's some sort of rocket pipe? You place the tobacco on your tongue, light it, and the draft created by the insulated bowl means it burns sideways through the flame tunnel, leaving no smoke (or blisters in your mouth). Brilliant! Is there nothing these guys can't rocket?!?

It's way better than the other, poster-size picture our friend made of Ernie and his pipe, in which a wisp of smoke is lazily curling up just into his left nostril.

Thanks Paul, that site is nifty. Makes me want our site to be better. But maybe it's good that we give more detailed information.

Just a quick question, the 8" plans description indicates it heats a 3 floor house. Is the heat just moved passively, are direct vents from the room of heat to other rooms cut in walls/ceilings etc...? Also, with a years heating, at least by the podcast, what is the lowest temperature seen and how large was the temp difference between the room of heat and the furthest room away/coldest room?

farthest room away is a tower and it holds the temps at 68 degrees. depends on how the house is configured as to how effective the heating is (just like every other heating system). the house described is passively heated with no vents or fans. this is why folks hire us to help plan installs. it might cost a bit but we are pretty good at giving folks what they need to handle house heating.
