There is a product called Sulfur that is available at most feed stores.  To use it just yourself with it before going outside, especially your feet and ankles.

If you forgot to use the sulfur and have some bites, rub a little sulfur on the bite.  This will kill them.

This is the remedy I have been using all my life

My husband and I discovered that St. John's Wort tincture - applied directly to the recently chiggered area on the skin - kills them and also stops the inflammation. You need to apply it as quickly as reasonably possible after getting some on you.  It seems to work if you use it within about 5-10 minutes.

We haven't had to dig any out for this reason.  Maybe the alcohol kills them?  St. John's Wort tincture topically is an excellent anti-inflammatory on it's own.  It's not a preventative, though.  We haven't found any natural preventative that works for them yet.  The standards for ticks like rose geranium and lime don't seem to help with these mites.

We are in the very southern NM desert.  Locals have said it's been quite a bad year for chiggers here.  I'm from Oregon and had never experienced them, but my husband grew up with the little pests.  The St. John's wort works really well.

Summer ended yesterday here.  Low of 37 last night means no more bugs for the rest of the fall.  So just move north a bunch and your summers will be much shorter.  And no chiggers, poisonous snakes, tarantulas, termites, anacondas or crocodiles.

I am so sick and tired of these itty bitty biting bugs that I now have definitely identified as chiggers, not the good ole red bug chiggers that can only be removed from epidermis by suffocating them with something like finger nail polish, these are some other type of chiggers that are kind of a white opaque color. yup I dug one out and got a view of it with a high power loupe. nasty little things that will disappear at 42 degrees F. I hate putting mosquito repellant 40% deet directly on my skin. repellant is the only thing that is effective that I have found yet. I too have an aversion to sanitizer, repellants and all the other icky sticky gooey stuff they sell in stores to put on your skin. but I did find after getting attacked by these summer time pests hot soapy water will wash them down the drain.
but, once you get attacked it takes time for skin to heal and it will never be the same. kind of like a pickle will never again be a cucumber. and it only takes a few steps out the door to get these things and its an episode of itchy and scratchy.  well I guess its about that time of month to get a good bath anyways. lol lol lol
it seems this year the summer heat will just not break and forecast for the next week has even higher and higher temperature going up to about 93 again in a few days.
