I cooked some quinoa this evening, 2 dry cups of quinoa made nearly 8 cups cooked. I cooked them in 1/2 water and 1/2 chicken broth.

The last picture, the container has cup markings, I'm gesturing towards the 1c and 2c levels.

I completed this BB over a number of sessions, because when I cook porridge it's usually just for me and I'm using 1/2 cup of oats at a time. My husband was unwell yesterday so I managed to do a double batch. That on top of 2 other 1/2 cup batches makes 2 cups.

My stove is gas and my recipe is as follows:

Porridge

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • pinch of salt

  • Method
Add all the ingredients into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer for about 5 minutes, or until the bubbles sound like they're saying town names.

I like to serve mine with honey :)

I cooked the rice tonight and ate some of it with my fried eggs and some home canned chow chow.  The rice was cooked on an electric stove, I bought these stainless steel pots 39 years ago, back when we manufactured here.

1 cup white rice and 2 cups water in the pot , lid put on, bring to a boil then turn heat down a lot, set timer for 20 minutes.

Salt, oil, 2 cups brown rice, a pinch of cardamom seeds (didn't have the pods on hand). This BB involved an electric stove top to go with a curry dish.

This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Food Prep and Preservation

To complete this badge bit, you must cook at least 2 cups of grain on a stove top.  (Note that this BB is part of a 4 part adventure in cooking grain in four different ways. Pseudograins are also allowed, but all four ways of cooking must be the same food prepared with 4 different cooking contraptions.)

These are different types of stove tops and how to use them.

    This is a gas stovetop:

    and how to use it:

    and how to use it

This is a wood stove top:

And this is one way of cooking on it:

Here is how to cook rice with a stove top:

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
      - you must produce at least two cups of grain (or reasonable substitute)
      - you must use a stovetop

To show you've completed this Badge Bit, you must provide:
       - a picture of your grain cooking on the stovetop
       - a picture showing your cooked grain that is obviously at least two cups
