Earthworks and Rainwater Harvesting Implementation: Hands On Practicum July 23th – August 1st 2011 (10 Days)
Water is life. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and implement water harvesting strategies. The course will cover theory and practice of water harvesting & storage from a permaculture perspective including: key strategies for the tropics, calculations for and design of water harvesting systems, earthworks for water harvesting, and water use efficiency. The 10-day course includes approximately 3.5 days of theory and 6.5 days of practical application including swale and pond construction.
In addition participants will be involved in our ongoing project which include biochar and soil building, planting, pest management, and any other daily priorities we encounter in the development of our center. Be ready to get dirty daily!
Topics covered will include:
Permaculture Overview / Key Principles / Theory (3.5 days) Water Strategies for the Tropics Whole Property Design – Keyline Principles Passive Rainwater harvesting Calculating rainwater harvest potential – roofs & landscape Wells for water harvest Earthworks Survey methods Earthworks for rainwater harvesting – Swales & ponds Roof capture & tank storage – first flush systems and tank material options Water Use Efficiency Home: Low flow fittings, Greywater re-use Farm/Garden: Efficient water delivery Drip irrigation, tree tubes etc. Soil protection – Mulch & shelterbelts
Practicum (6.5 days) Reviewing and correcting for water harvesting challenges Surveying for the swales & ponds Swale & pond Construction Managing machinery Pond repair/construction Revegetation Process
