richsoil.com is the first source I have seen that may be telling us this does NOT work unless we take it DRY
One strange thing about diatomaceous earth is that for it to work on killing bugs, you have to keep it dry. Even morning dew can make diatomaceous earth ineffective.
My understanding is that when diatomaceous earth becomes moist, the sharp thing is no longer happening. That's why you have to keep it dry when you use it.
Please answer if this means that when we humans eat it with water or milk and cereal etc.--it will not work and needs to be eaten dry because other sites do NOT say this.
Im wondering--I take it in water or with cereal and liquid like other sites recommend.
Is this a mistake and making it ineffective?
How should a human best take this so its effective and also safe regarding the water dehydration and drying agent issues?
My wife is still scared for me to give it to the children--any convincers from experience? Thanks for your help!
See Here that wolf creek site says the opposite:
People are always asking me, how to take diatomaceous earth. There is NO one perfect way to take DE. I KNOW you are already disappointed with this fact, as you were hoping there was ONLY ONE "Perfect" way to take it. (Sorry 'bout that) Everyone's' preferences are different. Some people take 1 heaping tsp. in a glass of water prior to each meal, 3x/day and swear by DE's wonderful health benefits keeping acne away, clean clear skin, better sleep, more energy, stronger hair and nails. Others take a heaping tablespoon just before bedtime, figuring it's best to take it away from food because of its detox benefits. Others take it in the morning in their juice. Still others put it in their protein drink, smoothies, morning coffee, etc. Whether you take DE once/day or 3x/day, everyone reports effectiveness and better health.
"I" take 2 tbsps. of DE daily with a very small amount of water, just enough to make it fluid (like water). I'm not interested in tasting the DE in a full 8 ounce glass of water. I stir it up well and immediately consume before the DE has a chance to settle at the bottom of the glass. I don't care for the taste of DE in my orange juice, but others like DE in their juice, coffee, protein drink, smoothies, etc.
As far as I have read there is no hard science supporting either that it does or doesn't work when wet. There are observations that it looses it's effectiveness in the garden when wet, but that could be due to some other factor, there's a lot going on in unscientific observations.
That being said, I have friends that have taken it in juice and given it to their kids (I keep thinking I want to try this) and they claim it really helped their son. They think he had worms, they think he got them from an infected dog they had. His bm's were so running his bum was starting to get raw, this went on for weeks. After taking DE, about 24 hours later his trouble cleared up. Now does this mean he had worms, that the DE killed them.... ? Who can say, but they are all believers and even saw the worm evidence in the dog vanish after giving it to her, so there you have it. More unscientific testimony.
I know for a fact that it works on pin worms by applying it externally to the bottom. They have a 30 day cycle and must lay their eggs outside the body to reinfect people. They cannot lay their eggs on one's bottom, nor can their eggs survive on one's bottom (due to the drying affect if nothing else) in a DE environment.
Even if one takes dry DE our bodies are mostly moisture. The DE will directly become 'wet'.
I cannot prove it, but I believe it works when wet. I just believe it works differently than it does when dry. I believe it also has other 'benefits' that may be playing a role in people's results when taking it internally.
It would be so nice if we had science on all the uses, but there is no harm in taking natural, food grade DE, so why not try it and see what results you get.
I can shed a little light on this subject with what I believe to be a degree of accuracy.
Initially buying it for health reasons, I also began experimenting with diatomaceous earth as a cheap polishing compound on cork wheels to polish out glass on my lathe. I LIKED the results. It leaves a nice polish.
When the wet slurry first hits the glass, one can hear the lite grinding whoosh sound it makes as it attacks the glass. The slurry is sort of slimy. . .so maybe it is not as active as completely dry DE. . . can't vouch for that for sure, but I CAN tell you that it DOES GRIND< and that means it is still in a hard partical form to some degree or another. I say this means it MUST work when wet.
I can also tell you that when I give DE to my kitty mixed in with his food, his runny, bloody stool shapes up very quickly (as long as I give it to him now and again, he remains okay) . This also tells me that it works wet.

EFT Trainer & Ingrid - Welcome to Permies, we're glad to have you here.
I've used DE for several years now and I've recommended it to my patient/clients, too. In both my and their reported experience(s) DE has been positive to their complaints. Researching DE, I've found that it has a hardness equal to diamond, this allows it to work mechanically and not be something that can be mutated from. It is honeycombed in structure so it can/will 'sweep' the walls and collect pathogens, cholesterol and even nutrients, vitamins & minerals, so timing is important. The high silica content is restorative in supplying the raw material for hair, bones, teeth, etc.
There is a caution in using DE, which is to avoid getting into the eyes or lungs as it can irritate and damage these delicate tissues, this fact is proof that it can abrade and lacerate in a moist, wet environment. When wet, it clumps and sticks and it has trouble dispersing finely and clinging to objects staticly, but wetness does not affect sharpness. Like glass, metal, coral or seashells, all are still sharp and can cut when wet. When you mix/stir up DE in a liquid it will not dissolve and will settle to the bottom quickly, unless mixed into somewhat of a thick medium, i.e. smoothie, maybe Kefir, yogurt, etc. If the DE is not dissolving, it is not breaking down or absorbing fluid, it's neutral.
