What is sustainable community? What does it take to join, start, or maintain an intentional community? This course explores these questions with Lost Valley, a 20-year-old ecologically-focused community, as a case study and classroom.

Curriculum:
The basis for the course is the Ecovillage Design Education curriculum developed by the Global Ecovillage Network. (You can read the whole EDE curriculum here.) This curriculum looks at sustainable community through four aspects of life: the social, the economic, the ecological, and worldview. The Creating Community program’s exploration of all four of these areas is informed deeply by permaculture. (For a longer permaculture-focused experience, students can take Creating Community in conjunction with our Fall Permaculture & Community course, Oct. 6 – Nov. 3.  Alternatively, our longer Summer Permaculture & Community course, June 16 – Aug. 6, fully integrates the material on permaculture and communities.)

    * The EDE Worldview unit relates sustainable living with a holistic, ecological understanding of and attunement to the world; with joy, celebration, and creativity; and with socially engaged spirituality.
    * The Economic unit considers possibilities and examples of local, sustainable economies; land-based micro-enterprise; right livelihood; and the legal and financial issues of establishing and maintaining communities.
    * The Social unit explores the personal and interpersonal aspects of community and sustainable living, including creating a climate of trust and intimacy; decision-making systems (Lost Valley’s consensus-based system provides a case study); resolving conflict; and communication.
    * The Ecological unit looks at the physical aspects of sustainable community. Its keystone module is Integrated Ecovillage Design.
