Last year I built an 8x8 foot brooder house , fashioned like a raised bed on bottom and a-frame roof out of pallet wood, plywood, chicken wire , covered with black tarp. I filled it with 18 inches of wood shavings and then put 100 chicks through it . At end of summer I stirred up bedding and threw 3-4inches of grass clippings on top .2 weeks ago I threw some straw down and put chicks in. I noticed them scratching right from the start and pulling up earthworms , pecking at ants and beetles. I guess I'll keep it going .

Thanks for the interest. I will take a few photos and then enlist the skills of my 15 year old daughter to upload them . I live in the vinyl era and have never even sent a text message before . I can barely type .

How cool! I got 25 Cornish cross this year and started them on biodynamic compost litter hoping for no pasty butt. Also tried the fermented feed. Two weeks in I only had 3 pasty butts and no deaths. I ended up supplementing the organic no soy or Gmo feed with worms every day since I got them, and now that my back hurts am thinking of adding worms to the biodynamic compost in the brooder so I can just turn over some litter every day instead of going worm collecting. I wondered though about the warming lights drying it out too much? Anyone doing this?
