Permaculture Course in Central/South America?

Hey,

my name is Jake and I'm new to permies.com. I signed up in an effort to be more informed about some WWOOFing opportunities and also see any courses that are legitimate and upcoming in the next few months. I am going to be WWOOFing and volunteering throughout Central America and South America over the next few months but I was looking to see if anyone knew of a permaculture course within Central and South America before I embark on this journey. It would be great to get some hands on experience and take an actual course that is very informative. I have been emailing the people at Rio Muchacho in Ecuador as I have only heard/read incredible things but they have been unresponsive over the course of the last 2 weeks and haven't gotten back to any of my few emails. Any information would be great, also if anyone knows of any WWOOFing opportunities as well or farms that I should check out because of your (or a friends) positive experience that would be awesome. Thanks so much and have a great day.

I too would be very much interested in knowing about any up and coming PDC's (or any good permaculture courses for that matter) in South America between September and February 2013. Also if anyone on this forum has had any experiences with Río Muchacho in Ecuador or knows of anyone, I'd much like to hear of your/their experiences, whether doing the month long course or just spending a few days there.

Jake - I emailed Río Muchacho roughly a week ago and have heard back from them since, so I'm assuming they eventually got back to you as well. The course does sound quite good, but as I wrote above, I'd really like to hear about some recent experiences from people who have either done the month long course or just spent a few days there. Also there is a El Manzano in Chile that does PDC's now and then whom I also emailed a week or so asking whether they had any PDC's planned for the months mentioned above. They said that nothing was planned as of yet, but to keep checking back because you never know, which makes me think that if there was enough interested in one taking place between Sep-Feb that they would probably put one on. So if you wouldn't mind doing a PDC in Chile between those months, perhaps send them an email of interest and perhaps the cogs might start turning. Also if you hear of any PDC's, experiences at Río Muchacho or anything WWOOFing related in South America which sounds incredible, please do share it here if you have the time. I'm trying to figure out what to do and where to do it during my time over there, so the info would definitely be appreciated!

El Manzano

Good Luck!

Jake, Mikael, and all others,

We have a 16 acre tropical permaculture farm in northwestern Panama that you are welcome to visit during your travels. We have planted a tropical orchard of over 100 trees, and are working on crop rotation of corn, beans, yuca, squash, greens, pineapple, papaya and more. You can see what we're up to on our public facebook page: www.facebook.com/artfarmpanama

We love to share our successes and failures and especially love to learn from others.
Feel free to contact us.
Pura Vida,
Lyn

Hey Doug, I'm definitely still looking and still very much interested. Who do you do PDCs through? That is, what permaculture group/organisation are you a part of? Peru, Bolivia or Argentina would be the ideal places for me, as that's where I'm going to be over the 5/6 months from September. Argentina near the end of the year would be absolutely perfect though. Anyway, let me know what you're thinking and what you end up deciding.

Take care,
Ayni

Mikael, I am with TreeYo Permaculture, you wrote us earlier. I am still trying to find a location and a good atmosphere to teach in. I have a few leads but nothing concrete as of right now. Will keep you posted.

Just posting a little update to say that I'm very much still interested in finding a PDC in either Peru, Bolivia, Argentina or Chile over the coming 6 months and will be leaving for Peru in 2 weeks. So if anyone hears of anything, or Doug, if you manage to find a place, do let me know.

Thanks in advance

Jake, the NGO I manage, Maya Mountain Research Farm, hosts a PDC in Belize. Next year will be our 8th year hosting PDCs, and our 25th year of farming here. You can read about our up coming PDC here http://www.mmrfbz.org/_8th_Annual_Permaculture_Design_Course.html which will be February 18th through March 1st, 2013, and see some of our latest activities on FB here http://www.facebook.com/MayaMountainResearchFarm. We are the oldest permaculture project in central America, and work at the intersection between agriculture and ecology.
