Hands-on Permaculture
and Ecological Landscape Management
*Workshop Series*
with Andrew Millison, Al Shay, and guests

Week 1- Sculpting Earthworks and Building Hardscapes: 1 Credit

June 25 - Surveying, tools, heavy equipment Operation with Al Shay
Learn how to use a transit to shoot elevations and distance, stake out a grading operation, construct a 2,4,or 5% slope, and to use a clinometer to determine height of trees from the ground. Learn how to do a pre operational check on equipment such as a mini-hoe and skid-steer, and excavate for foundations and bio-swales. Heavy equipment allows you to get more work done with less people in a shorter period of time. Make it work for you.

June 26 - Water management, grading, and re-vegetating earthworks
Learn the principles water harvesting. We will focus on swale building, fine grading, and overflow construction using a transit, “bunyip” water level and A-frame water level. Then mulching and vegetating the earthwork with seedballs and other methods. Gain the confidence to create a swale system from start to finish.

June 27 - Stone masonry using recycled materials, pathways, stairways, patio
Start by touring local projects that highlight attractive use of recycled concrete, brick and other materials. Learn the principles of dry-stack and mortared rock features. Excavate and construct the footings and walls for a seating and outdoor classroom area.

June 28 - Deck building using a laser plane level
Building upon the stone foundation from the previous day, the deck-building module will involve using a variety of leveling devices ranging from a water level to laser plane. We will look at using alternatives to wood decking and discuss the pros and cons. The use of power tools and hardware will also be covered.

Week 2 – Home Water Systems: Plumbing for sustainability: 1 Credit

July 9 –Tour local rainwater harvesting systems, disconnect the downspouts with Al Shay
Tour installations of water harvesting cisterns and systems throughout Corvallis. Divert the roof rainwater for gravity flow through a series of containment constructs and bio-filters, including a fully planted rain garden at a home demonstration site to be installed throughout the week. We’ll be using a transit and water level to accurately set the pipes.

July 10 – Rainwater harvesting cistern theory and installation
Learn best practices for cistern installation, including roof, plumbing, and cistern materials, filters and first flush diverters, and standards for potable rainwater systems. We will install a rainwater harvesting cistern as part of this week’s landscape water remodel.

July 11 – Greywater treatment system theory and installation with Dave Eckert
Learn about best practices for greywater treatment and what is currently legal in Oregon, California, Arizona, and New Mexico. Install a demonstration constructed wetlands system for a laundry machine at our residential demonstration site.

July 12 - Raingarden and small pond theory and installation
Complete our home landscape demonstration with the installation of a small pond and fully planted rain garden. The downspouts will now feed a diverse and productive ecosystem in the home water garden. We will discuss design and then install the landscape features.

Week 3 - Practical Permaculture Production: 1 Credit

July 16 – Spawning wild mushrooms, Oyster mushroom box, compost tea brewing with Jordan Weiss and Mathew Slaughter
‘Mushroom’ Jordan Weiss teaches low-tech methods for getting wild mushrooms to grow at home. We will collect the stem butts of local species and get naturalized cultures that can be used to inoculate a wide-range of substrates. We will use locally-produced spawn in a few myco-permaculture applications. Learn how to grow oyster mushrooms using practically free resources, i.e. pallets, silage, cardboard, burlap and other appropriate substrates. Learn a method for cold-pasteurizing a variety of silages for the purpose of growing oyster mushrooms, and explore innovative ways to compost wind-thrown trees. Learn the basics of compost tea brewing from Soil Food Web’s director Mathew Slaughter.

July 17 – Harvesting the permaculture landscape: food, medicine, mulch and materials with Heiko Koester
Join Eugene Permaculture botanist Heiko Koester as we harvest the diverse yields in a Permaculture landscape. Learn how to harvest herbs and make medicinal tinctures from them, harvest craft and building materials appropriately, identify and harvest edible “weeds”, and manage the landscape with “chop and drop” mulching.

July 18 - Rotational grazing management with Jason Bradford
Learn from Dr. Bradford how he builds soil and produces abundant organic food by intensive rotational grazing on diverse pastures for the nearly 1000 acres he manages outside of Corvallis. Learn the mechanics of establishing pastures, moving animals, and seasonal planning for broad scale farm management.

July 19 - Hedgerow establishment with Jude Hobbs
Learn the value of utilizing the edges with local Permaculture teacher and hedgerow expert Jude Hobbs. Delve into the planning and mechanics of establishing bio-diverse multi-functional hedgerows for farm and garden. Learn about appropriate species, plant protection and establishment, tour local hedgerows, and do a hands-on project related to hedgerow production.

Take any 1 day for $65, 1 week for $250, or all 3 weeks for $745
