Growing garlic in highlands of western Guatemala

Greetings Permies,

I'm spending a few months in Guatemala this winter. On break from my volunteer gig in the lowlands of eastern Guat, I'm spending a week in San Pedro la Laguna on the Lake Atitlan. My host would love to grow garlic on a small plot of land he owns. I have not seen this plot. Question is:

Can garlic grow here? Presume so, onions grow fine here, and garlic grows fine in areas of the US where there is no snow as well.

Anyone grown anything in this climate? Relatively temperate yearround, no snowfall... I don't know details on rainy season vs dry season. I'd love to know if you know when to plant garlic in the Lago Atitlan area.

We are in Costa Rica, at about 1500 meters... garlic seems to be a more difficult crop to grow here, and all throughout the country.

It seems to like sandy soil and raised beds or in planter boxes.

Most organic garlic we see is very small and difficult to use because of the small size of the cloves.

Most garlic here is imported from China.

We tend to grow it only for the chives.
