Not much of a garden yet, joined for the discussions about rocket mass heaters but the rest has gotten me motivated to get some small hugelkultur plots put together. I do love fresh sweet corn and cucumbers and the wife loves good tomatoes so that is what will be the fair for this year. How about you?

Steve and I have been organic gardening/homesteading/weaving/woodworking in Stone County since 1973!...Mountain View area...
|
Host a local plant and seed exchange, take a step away from the cash economy, meet your neighbors and promote permaculture!

Jennifer what have y'all got growing, living, happening etc? We just got our place last fall and haven't started much yet just trying to see what others in the area have been able to implement from permies.

Hi, there, Jennifer and Nathan, Our area of the Arkansas Ozarks has a lot of back to the land folks still here from the late sixties\early seventies...some of us have been here forty years. Lots of organic gardeners but it also became an an area know for it's craftsmen and women...both traditional and contempory...Kinda heavy on the bluegrass music though.

Well, we are new here so untill we get critters under control my plants don't have much chance. But I have big plans.
I could use some design help though

We went to Peace Valley yesterday. Nathin, do you know if that big lumber place gives away or sells chips/sawdust? I should have gotten the phone number off the sign.

So sorry for the typo and misspelling of your name Nathan. To make up for it I will mention a few things that are managing to grow for me.
Artic kiwi have leafed out and survived the winter in the ground, yay. I am real excited about that. I hope to propagate more of them.
My Rainer cherry is looking good but spent the winter potted but outside. If has gone into the ground, also hope to propagate.
Asparagus and walking onions of course do well.
We bought grape and blueberry plants but they may have to go into pots till more construction is completed. Most of my plants are potted.

Your thinking of Judd's. I too have wondered about chips, saw dust, scraps etc. never have stopped to ask as it seems I'm always in a hurry but I would bet they will let "waste" go for next to nothing.

Rhat it Nathan, Judds. I doubt it would be worth it for me to make a special trip out there as I get a dumptruck of chips delivered for $80a but when I am in the neighborhood anyway it could be nice to fill my pick up.
Could you post their number please?
The hummingbirds are already out and hungry, lol.
If you need backhoe work done go to the telephone office. Maurice is great

Judd's: 277-5503 talked to them today didn't think to ask about wood chips but there sawdust is $10 per pickup load seems fair to me but the only use I can think of is homemade fire starters. It's all hardwoods as they are a pallet mill.

Thank you Nathan. As I figured, would cost more to go pick some up than to be delivered.
Sawdust would be great muck I would think especially for blueberries. Maybe bedding under chickens?

Harrison area, reporting for duty. I just inherited a house and some land near Harrison and will be blistering my hands as I put in a little homestead for myself. Plan is to get a garden plotted out this year for planting next year with a temporary hoop or tunnel house so I can go mostly year round. How 'bout that May snow?! Latest snow since they started keeping records.

Welcome Case. How about a fall garden? Some fruit trees go in better in the Fall too. Good luck and have fun

I'd certainly consider fruit trees. In fact, they're part of the plan once I figure out what I want to do. The land I've got now is pretty much a blank slate. I plan in ordering in some 2nd year blueberry bushes to plant shortly. I also intend to become far more self-sufficient than we have been. Anyhow, thanks for reinforcing the fruit tree idea!
Edited: fixed some spelling oopsies. :-/

Hi, again, Case! I wondered if you knew that there is a Blues Fest in Leslie this saturday, May 11...just down hwy 65 a bit from you...the farmers mkt is at 8am, fishing derby, a few crafts and then music around town that afternoon until late. Tiny town but there are a lot of organic growers and artists in the community. And the best woodfired kiln, organic sourdough bread at Serenity Farms. We are forty miles away outside of Mountain View...If we ever pack up and move it would be to that little town.
There is a charge for the music but lots of free stuff going on too, and a good way to meet some 'neighbors'.

There is Goat Day next Saturday at Gorden's feed and supply, on HWY 60 east of Springfield, in Rogersville MO. Says a sale, information, and meat tasting. I don't know much as I am not involved but hope to attend.

Hi, Jennifer...this makes me think we need to start an "events in the Ozarks" topic! I'm gonna give it a try.

I'll be out of town that weekend but I appreciate the heads up. I like seeing the sheet number if events and things to do around these parts! Ha! Seems a greater variety than my old home town.
