I wonder if the business plan at Essex Farm - individuals buy a membership, and pick up a weekly box of food for a complete diet - vegs, meat, dairy, eggs, frut, maple syrup, etc - all organic, horse-powered, etc.. Seems to be a winner, that could work permaculturally. Here's a summary of their operation...

Also, Mrs. Kimball has written a book - 'The Dirty Life" which I'm enjoying very much.

Toby H..... what do you think re: economic feasibilty and permaculture?

(Also, I can see various pol/econ philosophies working out here.. profit maximizers could increase their membership price at every opportunity, while those more generously inclined, could hold their prices at whatever provides them an adequate and comfortable living.... and possibly undercut the 'greedier' ? :)

(If this has been fully discussed elsewhere, please forgive and send me there ;)

Ah, good question, Nancy. Suzy Bean posted about this book a while back: http://www.permies.com/t/9139/farm-income/Essex-Farm-Model-CSA-as. You might be interested to read those thoughts if you haven't already.

Also, I think to be in the running for Toby's book, your question/thread should be in the permaculture forum, not here in the farm income forum.

Thanks, Jocelyn! I did a search for 'Essex' before posting, as I was sure someone would have said something :) but got "0"... I don't find this search function quite as easy as the old system...darn, I'll have to work harder ;)

I'll jump over to Suzy's thread and post my enthusiasm. I'd really like Toby's opinion on their model, as he'd been emphasizing community over self sufficiency lately. But...well.... I guess I could also put it on the permaculture forum... hmmm...I realized too late that trying to get Toby's attention would be a no-no ;) (I have the his book, so don't need it.. but could pass it on! ;)
