Montana Organic Association Co-hosts Farm Tour with Ten Spoon Vineyard and Winery in Missoula

Missoula, Montana, September 7, 2011—What does it take to produce an award-winning organic wine and when are wine grapes ready to harvest? Why is it more important than ever to grow organically? You’ll learn all this and more on a tour of Ten Spoon Vineyard and Winery at 5:00 PM on Thursday, September 15, in Missoula, Montana, at the base of the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area. A tour of the vineyard and the winery will give a close-up view of what goes into making a bottle of exceptional organic wine with no added sulfites. Admission is free and snacks will be provided.
Winemaker Andy Sponseller will show you véraison (the key stage when grape skins begin to turn black or become translucent if they are white grapes). He will also demonstrate how to test for sugar, or brix, in grapes by testing the varieties of French-American hybrids growing at Ten Spoon. The Vineyard and Winery is determined to grow organically to improve the soil and create better tasting wine. Chemicals dull the fruit and sulfites mask the flavor. "Chemicals create a vicious circle," says Connie Poten, co-owner of Ten Spoon. "You need more of them to counteract the negative effects and soon you are trapped in an unhealthy cycle because you've killed off all the natural beneficial nutrients."
The Montana Organic Association will also explain why growing organically is vital for the sustainability of our health and the environment and how you can support the organic growers in the region. This event is sponsored by the Good Food Store.
Also plan on staying for the wine tasting, which continues until 9:00 PM. Wine tasting flights (three samples) are $5.50 and Ten Spoon’s friendly staff will be available for bottled wine sales.
Ten Spoon is Montana’s only commercial vineyard producing vintage wines. Andy Sponseller and Connie Poten started planting cold climate grapes in 1998. This year, they are adding 2.5 more acres of tried and true French-American hybrid varieties to their 5-acre vineyard.
