There are two options for permaculture education on Vashon Island, both starting soon.
Two different formats for the design course curriculum. One is the two-week long option at K-Jo Farm, and the other is a course spread out through a series of weekends, at Vashon CoHousing. If you live on Vashon or nearby, one of these may be perfect for you!
---------------------OPTION ONE---------------------- Permaculture Design Course August 25th - September 7th, 2008 With Adam Rawson and Marisha Auerbach At K-Jo Farm, Vashon Island, Wa. Permaculture is whole system design and development for sustainable living and land use - consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, yielding an abundance of food, water, shelter and energy for the provision of local needs. This complete, accredited course is suitable for everyone interested in permaculture and sustainable design – homeowners, gardeners, farmers, business owners, students, design and development professionals. At completion, students receive the Permaculture Design Certificate Topics include: PERMACULTURE PHILOSOPHY, ETHICS AND PRINCIPLES CONCEPTS AND THEMES IN DESIGN METHODS OF DESIGN PATTERN UNDERSTANDING, READING THE LANDSCAPE CLIMATIC FACTORS TREES AND THEIR ENERGY TRANSACTIONS WATER SOILS EARTHWORKING AND EARTH RESOURCES THE HUMID TROPICS, DRYLANDS AND HUMID COOL TO COLD CLIMATES AQUACULTURE THE STRATEGIES OF AN ALTERNATIVE GLOBAL NATION PERENNIAL AND ANNUAL GARDENS, FOOD FORESTS, PLANT PROPAGATION ANIMAL HUSBANDRY, SUSTAINABLE BUILDING, ENERGY, WASTE STRATEGIES, AND MORE

Weekend Permaculture Design Course at Vashon Co-Housing. September 19-November 23 Two weekends per month Facilitated by Marisha Auerbach, Dana Schuerholz, Adam Rawson, Kelda Miller and friends
The objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive overview of sustainable futures, based on permaculture philosophy, techniques and strategies that one could incorporate into their everyday life, or enhance their career. This course will provide diverse hands-on experience. The intention is to facilitate a systems approach to thinking about different issues, encouraging care for the earth and its inhabitants as a diverse community. This course will meet two weekends per month. There will be suggested readings and we will visit and network with others using permaculture principles in their lives and careers.
Topics include: Permaculture ethics & principles, patterning, design & observation, restoration ecology, edible landscaping, sustainable land use, forestry, nutrient cycling, ethnobotany, soil, water, bioregionalism, urban permaculture, appropriate technology, energy conservation, animal husbandry, seed saving, local economics, organic gardening, mycology, natural building, and more...
The tuition for this course is $900-$700 sliding scale. We are open to work/trade possibilities.

Update: the K-Jo Farmdesign course has been sadly cancelled.
The Vashon Cohousing course will still be happening this fall. And here's a pic of the flyer too.
