Garbanzo Beans too late to plant?

We like hummus. A can of organic Garbanzo Beans cost almost $1. Bulk beans are $1.69/lb. We'd like to grow our own but I think it's too late to plant.

I wonder if we sprout the beans like Mung beans, would that help put us ahead? Sprout them, then plant them? Or would they sprout just as quickly in the ground?
