I had an area where some hemlocks came down. I put in a 20x28 greenhouse. I have already ammeded th soil but I would like to hear what you would have to ammend the soil.

The soil was slippery with clay.

The good news it that it has great solar aspect and I have already planted. There are tomatoes, cukes, tomitillos, peppers, basil, edmame, daikon,  meyer lemon and some small figs already growing.

Thanks a ton for sharing!

Based on this tiny bit of info, I would guess lime and compost!

Mariline,

I find that organic matter (compost, mulch) solves almost every soil problem. Clay responds really well to organic matter; it makes it lighter and helps it drain, as well as holding more nutrients. I'd bet, as Paul has, that a space under hemlocks is acidic, so lime is probably a good thing to add. I also like to add rock dust occasionally, to add mobile minerals to the soil. If you really want to know what to add, get a professional soil test done (costs about $35). Your local extension service can tell you how and where to send the samples.

Send me some lemons when they are ripe!

Thanks for the replies. This was a nice opportunity to test myself. I had added 3 truckloads of compost, lime, 2 bags of really fine perlite and some granite dust both of which were hanging around and waiting for a use.

Thanks much!
