Constructing a sod house on your property: nebraskastudies.org (also excellent reference for pioneering on the great plains)
Constructing a log cabin: 2020site.org
Constructing a yurt: woodlandyurts.co.uk
Constructing a tree house: the treehouseguide.com
Constructing a stucco house (consider chicken wire instead of hay bales also): ihowd.com and housemouse.net
Constructing a teepee: enter "How to build teepees: make indian teepee" on Google
For nine different alternative affordable options check out the British site: Earthbuilding - Building Using Natural Materials
Also consider stone or concrete or a combo of stone and cement.
Mud pole, mud brick, clay brick and stucco or just a medium or large canvas tent from the Army Surplus.
Technically this goes under alternative building but a homestead needs a house and this section needs some posts.
Also tried to pick sites that were not selling information.

Lilac Moon - Homesteading in Northern Minnesota by Sheri Dixon at website Homestead.org. Interesting mix of homesteading and sustainable living ideals.
