Greetings,
I am delighted to announce that Marisha Auerbach, Permaculture teacher from Olympia,Washington will be teaching a weekend Permaculture Course at our beautiful farm on Whidbey Island.
The details are below. Marisha is passionate about teaching Permaculture and offering local communities sustainable ways to live on the earth.
Please call or email me for more information and you can now register through paypal on our website.

We would love to let as many people as possible know about this event so please pass this on to your lists.  Thanks.
Green blessings,

Permaculture Weekend on Whidbey ~ April 11-13, 2008

Friday Evening, April 11, 6-9 pm
Community Potluck ~ Slideshow
Permaculture ~ Positive Approaches to Environmental Ethics

Saturday, April 12, 10-5 pm
An Introduction to Permaculture ~ Interactive discussions and activities:

This workshop provides an opportunity to engage with the ethics and principles of permaculture introduced during the slideshow on Friday evening.  Through interactive discussion and activities, we will delve into permaculture theory to examine how humans can make healthy decisions in our livelihoods that have a positive impact on the planet and all species.

Sunday, April 13, 10-5 pm
Permaculture Design Charette

Today, we will explore the permaculture design process in games and activities to help us envision what sustainable possibilities we can create for our home sites.  Using Crow's  Daughter's gardens as a template, we will engage in the framework presented on Saturday to identify the how to meet on site needs.  By connecting elements together, we can minimize work and maximize efficency.

Marisha Auerbach
practices, studies, and teaches permaculture in Western Washington and internationally. Marisha graduated from The Evergreen State College in 1998, with a focus on permaculture. She has been teaching permaculture to interns in the greater Olympia area for the past nine years and taught her first permaculture course in 2002. Her hands-on experience includes helping develop permaculture systems at Wild Thyme Farm as well as developing her own site. Marisha is very interested in local economics and creating useful items using her resources. This manifests as several projects:Queen Bee Flower and Gem Essences, Herb'n Wisdom for permaculture consulting and herbal products, and Growing Greetings which produces plantable greeting cards and other products. Marisha has a small plant nursery which focuses on edible flowers and other gourmet specialty food items. She is passionate about creating perennial forage systems to for local foodsheds.

Visit Marisha's website www.HerbnWisdom.com for more information about her work.

This is a nonresidential weekend course.
The cost is $145 for the entire weekend.
Friday, $10-$20 sliding scale.
Saturday only, $80
Sunday only, $80
Group discounts are available and you can now register through paypal on our website www.crowsdaughter.com

From Pacific Coast Permaculture Design

Agroforestry - a dynamic, ecologically- based natural resources management system that, through the integration of trees in farmland and rangeland, diversifies and sustains production for increased social, economic and environmental benefits for land users at all levels. (ICRAF 1997)
Alley Cropping - an agroforestry intercropping system in which species of shrubs and trees are planted at spaces to leave room for herbaceous cropping between the rows, in the alleys.
Analogue Forestry - a system of forest management that combines the values of local forest biodiversity with organic crop cultivation. It seeks to establish a forest-type environment, analogous in architectural structure and ecological function to the original forest ecosystems that once existed in the area. Making use of the design of the natural forest, land is redesigned to incorporate economically viable trees and plants in a polycultural system that aims to unite biodiversity and economic gain for the small-scale farmer.
Aspect - the direction in which a view faces, e.g. in the northern hemisphere a southern aspect receives maximum sun.
Aquaculture - the culture of fish, aquatic organisms and plants in specially prepared and designed ponds rather than harvesting from the wild.
Biodiversity - the variety of organisms present, considered from many levels: cultivar, species, genus, family, as well as the diversity of habitats and ecosystems.
Constructed Wetland - a designed ecosystem for the filtration of greywaters. These systems are modeled after wetland ecologies where shallow water-loving plants create habitat for the filtration and cleaning of greywaters.
Cover Crops - plants grown for the production of organic matter, soil fertility, and erosion control. The use of cover crops is integral to the management of organic and integrated agricultural systems.
Ecological Aquaculture - the design of Aquaculture systems modeled after nature. These ecological systems mimic closed loop systems of lakes, ponds, wetlands and estuaries for the purposes of food production, water filtration and economic wellbeing.
Edge - the zone that creates an interface between two media or landscape forms. The edge is the area of maximum productivity and diversity, e.g. an estuary is on the edge of both freshwater and saltwater ecologies. This interface creates a habitat symbolic of both ecotypes.
Forest Garden - a multi-storied, food and habitat producing landscape, which is designed after forest ecosystems.
Greywater - the household water from sink, shower and laundry drains, which can be filtered through the processes of biology, for re-use within the landscape.
Guild as - a harmoniously interwoven group of plants and animals, which benefit each other through the symbiosis of design.
Intercropping - a system of growing two or more crops intermixed on the same area of ground over time and space.
Keyline - a system of water conservation and design developed by P.A. Yoemans where well-placed dams and ponds create on-site water availability for farm and domestic uses as well as the recharge of underground water tables.
Mulch - an organic or inorganic covering on the soil to improve its fertility, moisture retention capacity, temperature moderation and organic content.
Niche - the role or function within an ecosystem played by a particular organism.
Nitrogen Fixing Trees (NFTs) - plants that host symbiotic micro-organisms that have the ability to “fix” atmospheric nitrogen and make it available in the soil for other species. These plants are usually in the Legume family and are integral to the design of any permanent agriculture.
No-Till Agriculture - growing crops without cultivation of the soil, using instead a combination of trees crops, mulch and green manures to build soil fertility. Weeds are controlled by slashing, mulching and browsing.
Permaculture - a design science and philosophy, which seeks connections and relationships based on regeneration and permanence. The study of Permaculture is a hybrid of wisdom from the examination of traditional cultures, natural systems and appropriate technologies. With Permaculture we begin to gain an understanding of how we can design our human systems with intention based on the stability and resilience of natural systems. With Ecology as our foundation, we can then become part of the process of permanent culture and agriculture.
Polycultures - dynamic, self-organizing plant communities composed of several to many species.
Sector - outside natural energies such as wind, sun, fire, etc. which enter a site. These energies can be mitigated, captured or otherwise influenced through the placement and design of elements in the system.
Succession - change in composition of organisms in an ecosystem, often progressing from pioneer species to shrubs and trees. Permaculture Design seeks to accelerate succession by using and managing pioneer species rather than setting the system back by weeding.
Swales - a long, level trench laid out on contour to intercept and hold runoff water. The water slowly infiltrates into the soil, benefiting trees and shrubs planted on the downhill bank.
Taungya System - the method of raising forest trees in combination with agricultural crops. Used in the early stages of establishing a forest plantation to provide food and fertility and can lesson establishment costs.
Windbreak - a group of trees or shrubs in arrangement that will afford the protection from high winds to animals and/or crops. These zones can be design for multi-functional harvest of native plants, food, timber, forage, fodder, fertility and habitat.
Zones - a design method in which elements are placed according to how often they are used or need attention. The more an element is used, the closer to the house it is located.
