I'm wondering if you've got any advice on where to get tall fescue seeds.  It seems all of the grass seed available at places like Home Depot comes as a mix of mediocre varieties.  The online suppliers, on the other hand, get into tremendous detail about all the different cultivars, and I really have no way of comparing or knowing which is best.

Any suggestions, either about a mail order supplier or a particular variety of tall fescue to go for?  In case it's useful to know, I'm in central NJ.

Great site, btw!

Believe it or not, at Walmart I saw this Rebel Ultimate and Rebel Exada grass seed bags for ~$40.  They are a real good tall fescue variety.  it's made by pennington seed or something.  I'm thinking about getting a bag if the seeds last when stored in a garage or something.

Interesting...  However I may be the last person in America to not live within easy driving distance of a Walmart!  (Normally this is not something I'd be inclined to complaint about, snob that I am...  wink)

Since posting last night, I also found a reference to www.groworganic.com, which seems to have a pretty impressive product list, including a bunch of grass seeds that include fescue.

Any thoughts on some of the stuff listed there?

I have done a fair amount of research on this topic in the last few years, although the last time I actually purchased any seed was about ten years ago.

Tall fescue has an edge over other grasses because of the relationship with endophytes (I think it is a kind of fungus that grows on, or in, the grass).  Tall fescues that are "endophyte enhanced" can be healthier with less care.  The trouble with the endophytes is that it can make cattle, goats, horses and some other livestock sick if they eat lots of it.  So varieties of tall fescue have been introduced that are endophyte free or have a variety of endophyte that these animals can digest better.

But if you don't have farm animals, the "endophyte enhanced" will probably be your best bet.
