Balm of Gilead

so i recently discovered that cottonwood buds and bark can both be used medicinally to create Balm of Gilead.
now around here its too late to harvest the buds because they're already leaves, but i do have a lot of DEAD but recently cut cottonwood laying around that hasn't been used for hugelkultur yet, now before i do use it i want to make some of this with the bark, however, regardless of how many blogs and websites talk about how THEY made some, none really have a step by step how-to, does anyone on here know how to make medicines of any kind with the cottonwood bark?

if so, i would GREATLY appreciate any help on this, or a link to a site you found that gives a how-to, thanks:)

The Arrival of Allergy Season

Allergy season: the most dreadful season for a good percentage of the populace. Women’s Health Magazine estimates there are “40 million Americans who are suffering from seasonal allergies brought on by pollen and mold spores that bloom with warmer, wetter weather” every year. April is prime allergy season as the winter cold thaws, the flowers blossom, and a whole host of people start hacking and coughing. There is, however, some good news. There are a few things you can do to help decrease or even stop the appearance of your symptoms. Locate the article here: http://naturesbalance.com/natural-relief-from-allergy/

Add seafood to your diet

First of all, try adding foods like walnuts, flaxseed, and fish to your diet. These foods are rich in essential omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties that help to calm allergy inflammation.

Spice it up

You may have recognized the last time you went to a Mexican restaurant and bit into a chip loaded with spicy salsa that your nose began to run. Women’s Health Magazine explains this is because spicy foods work to “decongest your sinuses, increase circulation, and clear away head-clogging mucus.” Try adding a little cayenne or chili peppers to your next dish and make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.

Repel the dust

Interestingly enough, almost half of the dust we find inside our houses comes from outside. This means you are tracking those nasty little allergens in with you on the bottom of your feet. Invest in a doormat and reduce the dust by 10-25%. Take off your shoes altogether before coming inside for even better effect. Cannot keep away from the allergens? Be proactive. AllergyRelief101.com suggests, ““Take anti-histamine] an hour or two ahead of time. This can allow [it] to be circulating with your system, in advance of your exposure, and can reduce or get rid of the resulting response.”

Source:

Women's Health
http://blog.womenshealthmag.com/thisjustin/natural-allergy-relief/

Allergy Relief 101
http://www.allergyrelief101.com/

Possible answer to birth control!

Had to slap this up in a new topic. It's going through trials right now and so far shows every indication of being extremely promising. So far it promises that it is:

* Safe
* Cheap
* Reversible
* Quick
* Utterly reliable
* Long-term

Keep your eyes open, new info should be coming out soon.

Reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance (RISUG), formerly referred to as the synthetic polymer styrene maleic anhydride (SMA), is the development name of a male contraceptive developed at IIT Kharagpur in India by Dr. Sujoy K Guha. Phase III clinical trials are underway in India, slowed by insufficient volunteers.[1] It has been patented in India, China, Bangladesh, and the United States.[1] In the United States, there are efforts to get FDA approval under the name Vasalgel.[2]

AdvantagesSome of the advantages, according to Dr. Guha, are:

Effectiveness - There has been only one unplanned pregnancy among partners of the 250 men who have been injected RISUG[citation needed] — apparently due to an improperly administered injection. Out of the 250 men who have been injected RISUG, 15 men received the injection more than 10 years ago.
Convenience - There is no interruption before the sexual act.
Outpatient Procedure - Men can leave the hospital immediately after an injection and resume their normal sex lives within a week.
Duration of effect - According to Dr. Guha, a single 60 mg injection can be effective for at least 10 years.
Reduced side effects - After testing RISUG on more than 250 volunteers, neither Guha nor other researchers in the field report side effects other than a slight scrotal swelling in some men immediately following the injection, which goes away after a few weeks[6], though there are also unconfirmed reports of kidney problems (see Controversy section below for further details).[citation needed] Also, because sperm can still exit the body unimpeded, patients don’t experience the pressure or granulomas that can result from vasectomy.[3]
Reversibility - The contraceptive action appears to be reversible by flushing the vas deferens with another injection of dimethyl sulfoxide or sodium bicarbonate solution. (The sodium bicarbonate solution cannot be used as the solvent in the initial injection since it would neutralize the positive charge effect.) Although this reversal procedure has been tried only on primates, it has been repeatedly successful. Unlike in a vasectomy (see Blood-testis barrier), the vas deferens is not completely blocked, the body doesn't have to absorb the blocked sperm, and sperm antibodies are not produced in large numbers, making successful reversal more likely than with a vasovasostomy.

What plant or concoction did the Southwestern Indians eat to Conserve on Water?

I saw a documentary where the US army was fighting the Indians in the southwest, and they ate some sort of succulent or cacti concoction that helped their bodies more efficiently retain water. They, as a result had to carry less supplies for rehydration, where the US soldiers had to carry 10 gallons or so of water with them a day. I think it may have been made out of prickly pair pulp or barrel cactus pulp, but I'm not sure.

diagnosed with bipolar disorder

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, as was my sister, who has been hospitalized several times due to extreme depression. So I know it is hard. I also know about not wanting to take medications. I'm not currently taking antidepressants. Personally I found it easier to deal with my illness with medical help, but if you can't afford to go to a physician, I can understand. Just so you understand you might have a serious potentially life threatening medical condition, like diabetes or heart disease. I certainly hope you'd get medical help for those conditions. You might want to look into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which you can do with a loved one's help. There are some workbooks for it available. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is basically learning to retrain your thoughts and behaviors so you become aware of how they interact to cause your feelings. It's good that you're getting some exercise. Avoiding noisy stressful situations is helpful also or any situations with too much stimulation, which can trigger mania. The most important thing I've found as has my sister, is the need for regular sleep. Working nights may actually be the main problem, if you can't sleep well during the day. If I have even one bad night's sleep, I get worse symptoms. Those herbs I listed are all good for helping one sleep.
replica louis vuitton shoes

Comfrey and cancer-causing compounds: any new info?

I researched the heck out of Comfrey a couple years ago RE: PA safety. Does anyone have any newer information on this? The last in-depth studies seem to be in '08, and while they say that "some cultivars have more PAs than others", they do not specify if one type is safe, or even SAFER. I'd really like to be able to grow Comfrey, but until we know whether or not any certain plant will be carcinogenic/blood/liver toxic, I can't in good conscience have it on my land.

Scientists and medical doctors agree that the use of Comfrey should be restricted to topical use, and should never be ingested, as it contains dangerous amounts of hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). Use of comfrey can, because of these PAs, lead to veno-occlusive disease (VOD). VOD can in turn lead to liver failure, and comfrey has been implicated in at least one death. In 2001, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a warning against internal usage of herbal products containing comfrey, and eventually banned Comfrey products intended for internal use. In addition to restrictions on oral use, scientists and medical professionals recommend applying Comfrey extracts no longer than 10 days in a row, and no more than 4–6 weeks a year.

Comfrey contains excessive amounts of symphytine, a PA, the injection of the pure alkaloid of which may cause cancer in rats. The whole plant has also been shown to induce precancerous changes in rats.

Calming Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Pain Relief

I need help finding an herbal alternative. I have issues with stress, anxiety, and depression to a point that it's affecting my marriage and my interactions with others. Over the weekend a friend came over and while she was here she gave me some medication telling me that it would calm me. To be honest I felt the calming effect of marijuana without the high. My wife said while I was on the medication I was "cool". When I asked the friend what she gave me she told me it was Lorcet Plus. After searching online I discovered that is a narcotic pain medication consisting of hydrocodone and acetiminophen. I don't want to take pain pills and risk becoming addicted to them and I thought for sure there would be an herb or two that would provide me with this same calming effect without taking illegal narcotics or developing an addiction! Please help!!!

Some general peaves and tips regarding herbal medicine

Here are some extemporaneous tips and pet peaves regarding herbs.
* Herbs loose potency on drying, and sometimes their constituents not only degrade, but change into other things. Powdering herbs should only be done before use or extraction as the vast surface area exposed in powdering leads to rapid dissipation and degradation of the herb's constituents. If you buy dried herbs, look for ones that look and smell like something that was once alive. Brown-drab near powder with no smell is going to do nothing good for you. Such herb quality also speaks to a general poor handling, and one might be concerned with mold from improperly dried herbs. Very few herbs work well in capsules. Some herbs, like dandylion root, must be used fresh or freeze dried in order to be most effective. Fresh lobelia tincture will calm your nerves and stimulate your parasimpathetic nervous system. Dried lobelia will make you puke.
* If you want to make herbal oils and salves, don't stir them around in a double boiler. It makes the herb gods angry. Instead use the intermediary solvent extraction method which goes thusly: For every ounce of herb use 7 ounces of olive oil and 1/2 ounce of pure ethanol (95% counts as pure because if you open pure ethanol it will absorb water from the air). Grind the herb to a fine powder in a blender, taking care not to scorch. A chunk of dry ice in the blender can help with this, as can freezing the blender and herb beforehand. (Courtesy Adam Seller) Dump the powdered herb in a sealable container and moisten with 1/2 part ethanol (so if you have 3 ounces of herb, that's 1.5 oz ethanol). Leave overnight to macerate. Next day dump in blender with 7 parts olive oil and blend the hell out of it for like 15 minutes until the sides are warm but not hot. You are now done. Strain and bottle or melt with beeswax to make salve. The reason this is vastly superior to the double boiler method is because the alcohol disolves the herb overnight, and then the blades of the blender spinning the herb through the oil strips it all off. In a double boiler you're relying on heat. Here you're relying on kinetics and an intermediary solvent. Oils done this way come out green and fresh smelling as opposed to toasted smelling and olive oil colored. If your salve or oil is not the color of the plant it claims to represent, it's useless. Oh, it's also much less work than stirring a double boiler for hours.
* Never overlook weeds and common plants. They are often the best medicine. While we are all thrilled about exotics like Devil's Claw (not), who here remembers to drink their nettle tea? Weeds are wonderful because the're abundant, cheap, and easy to harvest. Using the simple medicine is always best. Incorporating herbs into your diet, is preferable to desperately resort to them once you're ill. Sure there are herbs for many dire situations, but it's not their strength. Their strength is in being entirely common, quotidian, homely, and available in quantity.
* Different herbs have different preferred methods of extraction. Tincture of Osha works great, tincture of peppermint is pointless. Osha's hard to get into tea, but peppermint infusion is lovely. When in doubt, consult Michael Moore's Materia Medica for extration methods and ratios. Southwest School of Botanical Medicine Herb Manuals
* Dose is dependent on many factors including the strength of the herb, drying method, extraction method, how old it is, etc. The common and generally safe herbs have a large range of safe dosages, so if you use too much it will probably just taste strong. Some herbs are very dose dependent like lobelia, pulsatilla, and veratrum. These sorts of herbs should be used only under supervision of someone with a clue. For topical applications, dose is dependent more on time then on concentration.
* Most herbalists are really bad. The discipline seems to attract megalomaniacs looking for easy dupes to milk for cash, people who substitute big words for critical thinking, and people who have an irrational faith in "nature" as a romantic benevolent force. Many will gladly lie to you confidently when they don't know, and will accept clients for diseases they know nothing about. Others will sexually harrass you while talking about energies. Put your bullshit meter on high sensitivity when dealing with alternative practitioners.
* All plants are psychoactive. They all affect your mind if you let them. Tell me a gardenia blossom does not change your consciousness. Tell me staring for 10 minutes at a passion flower will not get you high. Americans tend to have a consumer mindset toward plant drugs and utterly fail to benefit from them. If you're interested in cultivating an intuitive relationship with plants, start by paying attention to the plants around you. Some things are subtle. If you blast your brains with mescaline, you will not hear the quiet ways plants talk to you. If all the house lights are up, you can't see the movie. Quit chasing idiotic highs. The cultures who used drug plants ritually did not just get a bunch of friends together, say a prayer, and trip. There was strategy, and contingencies, and things to do. Do not trivialize halucinogenic cultures by presuming that what you do with drugs bears much in common with what they do.
* If you're interested in Native American culture, don't presume to speak for them, don't rip off their art, technology or beliefs and pass them off as your own, or pass your own off as theirs. Provide tangible material support. Always bring food. Listen more than you speak. Don't presume that people who disagree with you don't understand what you're saying. Remember Native Americans know much more about white culture than we know about them. Don't make Native American people into some romanticized representatives of a tranquil and harmonious past. All that hippie fake Indian shit is offensive and dangerous. Lots of Native kids grow up with a distorted understanding of their own culture because of our illusion making. Ritual is an important but small part of Native cultures. If you read Native news, they spend more time talking about land and water rights, electrification, health issues, domestic violence, and substance abuse. Remember that American herbalism and Permaculture owe Native American cultures a great debt.

Cannabis Sativa / Migraines

My friend has had intense migranes for 20-25 years nearly everyday for that time. He's had an MRI and doctors are puzzled as to why he has such a chronic condition. He's used conventional aids like coffee (caffeine), headache medications (excredrin) to no real effect. The relief was very temporal and then it was back to immense pain (crippling at times, on all 4's crawling around the house). He's gotten to the point where he is now on a vaporiser which administers intense analgesics in vapor form a few times daily (I believe opiates)...He's a very 'conservative' fellow and didn't even think to try that 'one last option' as far as real relief..I was able to find him some exceptional cannabis and it was the only true relief he's felt in 20 some odd years of burdening headaches. I wanted to share this testimonial, as our culture acts as if synthetics are always the answer. They're not. Plants and their bio-available constiuents we're tailor-made to provide us promising (and pleasing) outcomes. Again, it's been the only key he's discovered for relief in over 20+ years! Peace to all -

I have heard that Mushrooms are good for introducing bacterias and yoghurt of course.

Any suggestions?

We had our septic tank pumped recently and the septic Guy was explaining how a trace amount of antibiotics will destroy the beneficial bacteria in the septic tank. if a trace amount in a huge tank----100 gallons?? can cause havoc, I am petrified as to what it does to a little boy!

epazote, the intrepid weed

I recently took a tour of community gardens in mostly Latin parts of town and was introduced to this plant.

Now the NYTimes has discovered it! :)

From a column entitled "Urban Forager"

"Epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides or Chenopodium ambrosioides), a.k.a pasote or pasotes, Mexican tea and wormseed, is native to Mexico and Central and South America. An annual that can grow to three or four feet, with toothed, lance-shaped leaves, epazote favors full sunlight and is an intrepid weed. I’ve seen it flourishing throughout the city from the summer through mid-autumn, growing in cracks of the pavement, around trees on the sidewalk and in front yards in Brooklyn.

American Indians like the Creek and the Seminole used fresh epazote as a treatment for fever and worms in children. According to the Department of Animal Science at Cornell University, the oil from epazote was used in the early part of the 20th century as a remedy for internal parasites (like ascarids and hookworms) in humans and animals, though the practice was halted for toxicity reasons. (Though the essential oil of epazote is considered toxic, the leaves are safe to consume.)

A Nuyorican friend who knows the herb as pasote, and who learned to gather it in the wild with his grandmother, said his family burned epazote to “cleanse” a room, much as some people burn sage in a new apartment.

Epazote leaves are also used to flavor guacamole and to make beans less gas-producing; it is also used in quesadillas, sopes, tamales, chilaquiles and enchiladas. In the Philippines, it is known as pasotes, and is used to flavor the chicken dish pipian manok."

http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/10/urban-forager-that-gasoline-smell-time-for-guacamole/?pagemode=print

Study: Chinese Herbs Equal to Tamiflu in Reducing H1N1 Fever

8-15 - A traditional Chinese herbal treatment may reduce fever from H1N1 ("swine flu") influenza just as well as the prescription medication Tamiflu, a new study suggests.

"For thousands of years, Chinese herbs have been used to treat influenza," study co-authors Dr. Chen Wang and Dr. Bin Cao, of Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital, Capital Medical University, in China, said in an email. "The pandemic influenza 2009 gave us the opportunity to evaluate a standard Chinese herb formula" designed to target the flu, they added.

Cao and Wang, who specialize in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology, said the herbal recipe -- known as maxingshigan-yinqiaosan (M-Y) -- is easily accessible throughout China and much less expensive than Tamiflu (oseltamivir).

However, finding the medicine in the United States is difficult, if not impossible, given that it contains the stimulant ephedra. The United States has banned or restricted the sale of ephedra products because of concerns about possible complications, such as heart attack, stroke and even death, related to its use as a weight-loss supplement.

http://consumer.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=655877

Staphylococcus / Herbal Remedies

Are there any here who have alleviated contracted staph infections by way of herbal treatment?

I think I may have a slight staph infection courtesy a spider bite that my shirt rubbed against and has ruptured. The staph that we have present on our skin may have made their way in the injection point and the area is very red/swollen/inflammed similar to a flip flop blister in the heat of the summer.

A good friend of mine suggested oil of oregano for its anti-microbial properties and efficacy against some strains of staph (reference here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2001/10/011011065609.htm)...Looks to be very promising.

For the time being however, thanks to the pain, I've applied some mupirocin (bactroban) ointment for staph.aureus strain.
Beneficial herbs that pop up specificly for sick humans and other animals?

Hi there,

I have heard herbalists claim on several podcasts now that they find certain herbs that will help certain diseases around people's houses with those exact diseases. So lets say someone is having lots of problems with their liver, you might find herbs that will help cleanse the liver. I could see many reasons for this to be true, mutual benefits for both the plant and the user. I mean, the plants gets noticed and will be propagated. This will most likely mean it gets to pass on its genes more effectively. The user of the plant gets to live a healthier life and also spreading its genes better. Sounds reasonable to me. But how would this work?
I know plants can suss out intelligently where and in which direction to grow roots so they don't compete too much with other plants. Or in which direction to grow for optimal light, or even to release pheromones that will attract the animal that predates on a organism that will eat them. But this 'associative herbal behavior' is a new one to me :-D
As a beginning 'believer' in the Gaia theory, I can imagine this to be true... The problem I have is that my right brain is going 'uhuh, uhuh' and nodding. My left brain isn't buying it though, and it wants some proof for this.

Do people here know about these kinds of occurrences and do you have some studies or websites on this?

With love for the Earth,
Berry

Gentleness for the tough

 I've been helping a friend with a couple of health issues, well, mishaps actually, and it's reminding of me something valuable about the relationship between the herbal remedy and the individual.

 He's a tough guy. Really tough. He's a farmhand, a logger (he's our firewood guy), a hunter, among other things. He's also a bachelor who lives on beer, cigarettes and meat. Gets injured plenty, just grits his teeth. But when he inhaled some chemical fumes and couldn't breathe, he asked if I had any "old-time" remedy. I gave him mullein, in the form of a syrup of the leaves, which he used to sweeten his coffee, or took by the spoonful. He told me it not only helped his breathing, but it "knocked him on his ass", as he put it.

 When my son was a little boy, elderflower tea worked for whatever ailed him. It's pretty versatile for most childhood ailments anyway, but it seemed to just "settle" him on a deeper level. Flash forward to present day, he is now a full grown bear of a man. We recently put in an elder bush and when he came to visit, he walked right up to it and said "excellent." I asked him why he said that,but he couldn't really say. He didn't know what it was, and had no memory of elderflower teas. Yet he was strongly drawn to that bush.

I would like to hear any other similar stories, if anyone would like to share. Which plants just "work"?
C

Does anyone know how the properties of Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) differ from the common Sage (Salvia Officinalis) and other wild varieties?

I would specifically like to know why Clary Sage is always used for the essential oil. Is it simply more aromatic?

Thanks.

Lyme Disease

I am comfortable with this forum so I want to bring up this topic here.

I got lyme a couple years ago but cured it with antibiotics quick enough that I got no bad symptoms. But people say again and again, it doesn't really go away. I was at the northeast permie convergence and they recommended some herbal remedies to keep the numbers low.

I think somebody said japanese knotweed root, and something else too.

Could someone point me in the direction of a trusted online herb dealer they know? and also, from whom could I find out how much to take?

Thank you fellow permies.. =)

What's your opinion on web resource - Ryan Drum

Have you heard of Ryan Drum?

http://www.ryandrum.com/index.htm#articles

I just discovered his site on herbal medicine and native plants and I'm very impressed. Looking at his university credentials and 'backwoods cred,' I'm even more impressed.

I would not mimic his more extreme treatment anecdotes at my experience level, but would like to learn and share general knowledge information from his articles and recipes.

I'd a second opinion from more experienced herbal medicine practitioners, as I'm inclined to take the guy seriously. Before I read all his articles and start quoting him, I would like to be warned if he's outside the bounds of reason for a seasoned practitioner.

If responders could help me out by describing your approximate experience level, or giving anecdotes that explain why you agree or disagree based on your own experiences, that would be really great. I'm mostly an armchair herbalist myself, so I don't need help comparing basic literature so much as a second opinion from more experienced herbalists.

Thanks,
Erica W

Using tinctures in a salve

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me out here, because my Google-fu has failed me miserably. My father broke his back in four places recently (!)--he's going to be fine, no paralysis or damage to the spinal cord or neck, thank gods--and I'd like to make him a good bone-healing salve to apply to the area. I already have comfrey to make a base oil, and I also have a tincture of boneset that I'd like to add, for obvious reasons. But the tincture is alcohol, which I'm guessing will not incorporate well. Any suggestions for how I should go about adding the tincture? Or would it be better to just go and get some dried boneset herb and make an oil infusion to add instead?

All help appreciated--thanks!

Robyn M.
