looking for like minded survivalists in queensland.

i am looking for like minded individuals to help me finish what i have already started on my 40 acre property out past kingaroy and have that same person build their own structure to live in on a permanant basis. my vision is to create A REFUGE and community of people with high morals that live or have the CHRISTIAN view of how to live their own lives. a vision of having a community that will DEFEND themselves and what they have for WHEN THE POOH DOES HIT THE FAN. those here reading this must also know that a planned third war is NOT THAT FAR AWAY. those interested in living at least 20 minutes from the nearest town must have their own transport. smokers need not get in touch as i dont want or desire butts all over the property. get in touch. regards steve

any permies here from australia.????

hellow everyone, i am brisbane australia, but have a 40 acre property way out in the sticks. i am not one to beat around the bush so to speak and tell it like it is. i would like someone here that is either from Queensland australia or knows of someone, to get in contact with me concerning doing such a premacuture community on my property. i would prefer either a single bloke at first or a married couple with no young kids, mainly because the place IS NOT FENCED and it has too DEEP DAMS. i need help in FINISHING what i have already started, and those that help will be bale to live there in their own built dwelling. my vision is one of SURVIVAL for what is soon coming upon this world whether one likes to believe in it or not is a mute point. i desire the place to become self sufficent, it is not connected to the power grid and so a generator is what i have with a small battery bank. 12 volt shower is also in place etc in a shed. i am wanting someone with the same vision as mine and that is to CREATE A COMMUNITY OF SURVIVALISTS and eco friendly dwellers that have skills that will compliment my own in bringing such a dream to task. thanks 4 your time in reading this post. regards steve

10 Week Internship @ Zaytuna Farm, PRI Australia : Advice Needed!!

Hello fellow permies,

I am going to Zaytuna Farm this April for the 10 week internship course. I was wondering if there are any past interns around to give me some tips on a couple of things.

What should I pack?
What kind of weather am I looking at? (This is my first time in Aussie land.)
What kind of tent should I get?
What kind of expenses am I looking at over the 10 weeks and a rough estimate if possible?
Easiest way to get to the farm from Brisbane?'

Apart from all of that I would appreciate any other advice you can give me. I am really excited and eager to make the most of my time and learn as much as I can and hopefully go on to practice and share the knowledge around the world.

Thanks,
Ib

They may appear strange and exotic, but humans have been using bromeliads for thousands of years and one of our common fruits, the pineapple, is actually a bromeliad. Bromeliads are one of the most diversified plants with respect to the size, shape, texture, colour and markings that can exist among its fifty or so genera and over two thousand recognized species.

Many bromeliads are epiphyts, (which live on other plants without being parasites), but there is a bromeliad for every occasion and landscape. They’re great as pot plants as well as for landscaping, and vary in size from inch long midgets to giants over 10m. What’s more, they’re easy to care for, hardy plants with low water requirements. As more and more stunning varieties are being introduced to the already available mind-boggling range, bromeliads are now coming on their own as living gifts.

Where are they originally from?

Basically natives of South America, the largest number of primitive species are found in Mexico, the Antilles, Costa Rica, eastern and southern Brazil, the Andes of Columbia, Peru and Chile. They thrive in the lowlands of the tropical forests and even in some higher regions (up to 4000 m) of Sierra Madre and the Andes. They were introduced to the world in the 19th century when breeders from Belgium, France and the Netherlands started hybridizing plants for wholesale trade. They regained popularity after World War II which has only increased in recent years.

Where can they grow?

Bromeliads are hardy plants and can be grown indoors as well as outdoors. They can be found braving the salt spray along seashores, and in the extreme heat and drought of deserts. Some thrive on the ground in the filtered, speckled light of the rain forest while others reach high in the tree tops as epiphytes, for plenty of light and air. They can grow at sea level and as high as 16,000 feet. Some are terrestrial and others are saxicolous (growing on rocks), but most of them grow in trees, epiphytically; they do not drain the host tree, but simply attach to the rough bark of the trunk or branches.

How can I cultivate broms?

Bromeliads are very adaptable and most will respond very well to less than ideal conditions. But like most plants, bromeliads, too, need to adjust when moved to new surroundings. Extra care must be provided to a plant during this adjustment period to provide its critical environmental needs. In many cases this means extra water or misting of the plant. It could be a need for extra air movement or cooler temperatures.

If you want to know more about Bromeliads, then visit www.plantbiotech.com.au

Fruiting Rockery Cover / Vine??

Hi Everyone,

We live just outside Toowoomba, in QLD and we have a rockery area, which we are wanting to cover in some sort of fruiting ground cover / rock cover. I am wanting to make the most use of the area and would rather put the spot to several uses, not just cover it in something that looks pretty. Does anyone have any ideas of something? I was assuming some sort of berry would be suitable, but I am really not sure. We get frost here over winter, so perhaps something frost resistent would be best. Does anyone have any ideas?

Basic idea:

[li]a creeper/rock cover[/li]
[li]fruiting / some kind of eddible use[/li]
[li]Frost resistent.[/li]

Thanks for your help

Mark

Bio-vital composting-Building and Turning -Paul Taylor-Trustnature

Here is link that shows you a compost process where we use composting as the medium for growing a high diversities of beneficial soil organism. Soil organism re-build de-graded soils and reduce the need for water and fertilisers.

#This link is part 1 of the Bio-vital composting process
.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAB3KP0KLj4&feature=player_detailpage

#This link is part 2 of Bio-vital composting the turning process
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6H0BTnP5Qc
Quality compost is an essential element to sustainable design, and integral to Permaculture Principals (see www.permaculture.com.au). We need to improve our soils while we maintain profitable production, one of the few ways we can accomplish this is to make good compost, compost that can be make for free from local waste products. At the end of the day we would like to see people growing their own 'Food For Free' and use agriculture as a way to both product vital foods profitably while farmers improve soil fertility.

We turn the compost at regular intervals, the basic practice is to turn when: 1. the pile gets too dry 2. The pile is too hot, if this is the case we add 10% of the total mass as high carbon material (straw, sawdust, shredded paper). 3. If the compost is too cool, we add 10% of the total mass as high N material i.e. manures, blood and bone meal or active green legumes. 4. to aerate the pile, this is usually accomplished when we turn to add moisture, we try to manage to turn the stack less and let natural process dominate Trust Nature. If we turn too frequently we override natural cycles. The intention is to turn the stack in ten days but it must be kept damp, this is accomplished by lightly misting the stack every day and keeping it lightly covered with a tarp. Keep the tarp loose so the stack can breathe, never wrap it up tightly because, just like us, it needs to breathe. The decomposition process is not limited to microbes gobbling up organic matter and passing it out, but also by the bio-chemical process caused by microbial enzymes, and excretions. The power of Nature is remarkable ideally the stack is turned just 4 times over 6-8 weeks and we have the most remarkable topsoil, rich in soil carbon, but most remarkable it is more than 50% micro-organisms in the highest diversity possible so that the microbes are there to support plant and soil vitality. When in doubt depend on natural processes. for more information, feel free to visit the website www.trustnature.com.au or contact paul directly at paul@trustnature.com.au

Thanks Kane Abbott
please leave a comment

G'day,

Following on from a similar, though longer workshop held in El Arenal in Jalisco, Mexico in late 2009, we are holding a 'GIS/Watershed Analysis for Permaculture Practicum' from the 10-11th of August 2011 here in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. Again this is subject to requests over the year and particularly more recently. The short notice is due to our 'chock a block' schedule especially with the RegenAG workshop series starting in August and taking great bookings plus a number of requests to hold such a workshop before too long so here it is....

Similar to our recent 'Earthworks Practicum' we will be hosting a minimum number of participants (8) in our family home. The workshop will focus on using the various commonly available software including Google Earth and MapInfo Professional. Mapping techniques using modern and ancient levels plus GPS technology will also be integrated into this workshop. Our simple intention is to skill people to be able to use these techniques to develop their digital cartographic skills for the purposes of creating Permaculture designs as we have been doing since 1996.

This workshop is not intended for those who find reading maps difficult or who have difficulty with operating computers.

Details are below:

Date: 10-11 August, 2010

Where: 45 Casey St, Bendigo East, Victoria, Australia

What to Bring: Warm Clothes, Bed Clothes, Sleeping Bag, Pillow, Bath Towel, Notes, Great Positive Attitude

Accommodation: 45 Casey St, Bendigo East, Victoria, Australia

Public Transport: Flights into Melbourne (MEL) & almost hourly trains from Melbourne to Bendigo.
Earthworks Practicum with Darren Doherty, Eppalock, Victoria, Australia

Australia Felix Permaculture - Earthworks Practicum

People have been asking us for years if they could work with us on one of our projects to gain the practical experience of putting a design into practice. We finally have found some time to do some work on our 9ha (23 acre) patch 20km outside of Bendigo (8km from Strathfieldsaye) where we are starting the process of developing this site. This phase of the process involves us working with one of our favourite contractors in Jennings Earthmoving Services (Castlemaine VIC) whom we have worked with since we started our business over 17 years ago.

Over the week of the 14-18 June 2010 we are building a 1ML Ridge Dam, Access Roads (that also collect water), Installing Concrete Pipes, Entrances, House & Cabin sites, Tank sites, Lockpipe Installation & Diversion Drains, plus a couple of Small Wetlands, Leaky Weir/Induced Stream Meandering systems, & Gully Restoration.

So it will be a busy week and we would love to have a few folks join us. We have kept the price down real low and have made it extra cheap for couples to attend. It is winter so it will be cool-cold so camping is optional and we have accommodation available in shared housing both in town in Bendigo and 5 minutes away at one of our friend’s farmhouse. We will feed you really well from our gardens and from our various local suppliers of meat and dairy. Vego’s are catered for too, if you have really specific needs then you’ll have to let us know well beforehand. We’ll be filming the whole process, so be prepared to be on camera.

Details are below:

Date: 14-18 June 2010

Where: Corner Shanahans Rd & Mills Rd, Eppalock, Victoria, Australia

What to Bring: Warm Work Clothes and Boots, Camping Gear (if camping), Notebook, Camera, Great Positive Attitude

Accommodation: On site Camping or at 45 Casey St, Bendigo East, Victoria, Australia

Public Transport: Flights into Melbourne (MEL) & almost hourly trains from Melbourne to Bendigo. As always our typical open access to all kinds of electronic materials applies so please bring a portable hard-drive or larger memory stick.

Program:

Day 1:

· AM (Bendigo) Overview of Design including catchment analysis, site walk/landscape reading, geotechnical reports, Digital Design: cross sections/plan view/volumes, budgeting, contractor relations and scheduling + sequence of works

· PM (Eppalock) Site set out with various survey equipment (high and low tech)

· Machinery arrival & meeting with Earthmover

Day 2:

· Continue set out

· Work with Earthmover and crew guided hands-on description throughout of various works

Day 3-5:

· Continue to work through the development including finishing, seeding, mulching etc.

· Party at site on Friday night with a few drinks and a BBQ on our deck on our existing dam.
