Rocket Mass Heaters, Ernie and Erica, July-Aug 2012?

It looks like there is a big blank spot on our eastward Rocket Mass Heaters tour this summer / early fall.
And that blank spot has Missoula (and the rest of Montana) right in the middle of it.

Would anyone be interested in hosting us, either to do a public event or a private site visit, on our way to spread the word about rocket mass heaters to an unsuspecting Eastern audience?

Paul has first dibs, but as Paul is busy the next few weeks, he may be willing to share if we come up with a game plan.

Come on over to the Wood Burning Stoves forums if this is a strange new concept and you need some time to think about it.

Yours,
Erica and Ernie Wisner
http://www.ErnieAndErica.info

Seeking eco-friendly roommate

I recently became the official owner of a 3-bedroom trailer on a grassy lot in the heart of westside missoula, a very short walking distance from the Missoula Food Co-op (an extra nice perk as far as i'm concerned). At present, 2 of the bedrooms are occupied (with me in one bedroom, and a couple I'm renting to in the other). Would like to rent the 3rd bedroom to someone who also strives to live a permaculture-oriented lifestyle, without having to feel puritanical about it. I've already begun work on transforming some of the grass outside into a gardening area where I plan to experiment and play with growing perennials and herbs, and if other roommates want to garden as well, I'm sure we can find enough spots outside for everyone to have an area where they can do their thing. One aspiration I have for the summer is to build a rocket mass heater in the central dining room area, and possibly host a work party (or maybe even multiple parties) to solicit help in getting it designed and built, bribing guests with organically prepared food.

So anyway, if anyone is interested in renting a small but affordable bedroom in an old 1970's trailer that aspires to be transformed into an ecologically sustainable dwelling, the room is $260 / month + 1/3 share of utilities. Would like to find someone to move in by the beginning of April if possible.

missoula permaculture potluck

When I was in Seattle, somebody started a permaculture potluck. It was awesome. In no time there was a big crowd of great folks.

Then somebody got the idea of making it a potluck + "work party" and they quickly dwindled to oblivion. Not because people were shy of hard work, but because a lot of these events struck me as hardly "permaculture".

So I'm thinking it would be great to have something that was strictly a permaculture potluck.

I'm in an extra tiny place, anybody with a larger place wanna host the first?

And, it seems kinda silly to talk about a potluck without attendees: if there were a permaculture potluck, who would wanna come? Two people? Twenty?

Looking for land to buy or garden plot to rent in Missoula area

First of all, I'm looking for 5-10+ acres to buy in the Missoula area. I will use it primarily for subsistence farming and building an off grid permanent home for my family. I would like a plot within 30 miles of Missoula with varied terrain or south-facing slope, access to water, and no covenants. Is there anyone out there that wants to sell or knows of any available land? I've been looking through traditional methods but haven't found anything great yet so thought I would put this out here.

I'm also looking for a place to garden this summer. I have done a plot in the community gardens with Garden City Harvest (and I think it's a really great organization!), but I'm interested in growing a larger percentage of my food this year and the plots aren't big enough for my needs. If there's anyone out there who would be interested in a mutually-beneficial partnership? You own the land, I'll do the work, we both get veggies? All of my gardening practices are considered organic and sustainable in every detail. I'd also be willing to pay a certain amount to rent a good garden space, but be reasonable as I'm trying to be very frugal!

Please let me know if you are interested or if you know of any resources that might be helpful to my endeavors. Thank you!!

Permaculture Freeschool Thursdays

Last Thursday, the freeschool group that meets on the ground floor of the University Center nearly every Thursday evening launched into its permaculture-oriented phase, as we started discussing Chapter 1 of Sepp Holzer's Permaculture book. Our initial plan had been to go through around a chapter each week, but due to the density of the material and the length of the chapters, we decided that we'll need to spend at least another week (maybe more) before we'll be ready to say we're finished with Chapter 1, so...

Next Thursday, the plan is to have another fairly informal discussion group, loosely themed around some of the topics in chapter 1 of the Sepp Holzer book. Anyone with an interest is welcome to come, regardless of whether or not you've read any of the book. It does help if more people are familiar with the topic being talked about, but we don't want to turn anyone away if they haven't had a chance to study it, and due to the informal nature of the gatherings, we often wander into talking about other subjects that are only semi-related. That's the nature of this freeschool, and those who attend either like it, or those that don't stop showing up. :)

If anyone wants to come and participate, we'll be meeting next Thursday on the ground floor of the University Center, and would welcome any newcomers. Northern section of the building, between Just Chillin and the University bookstore, out in the middle area where there the tables and chairs are located. We begin at roughly 5:30pm.

Who wants to find/form an intentional community house in town?

I want to put my feelers out there and see how many other people in Missoula (or those thinking about moving here) might be looking for the same thing I am: Generally, a place to live and practice an ecologically healthy, autonomous, egalitarian community lifestyle in or very near to town. (At least within biking distance of Missoula.)

More specifically, here are some "ideal" qualities in the place / group I'm looking for:

Leaderless / consensus decision making. I don't want to live under a feifdom or an oligarchy, and I certainly don't want to be a dictator. This means there would need to be a mutual willingness to take the time to hash things out as a group to reach agreements that are livable to everyone when conflicts arise. Yes, consensus can take time, but I find that preferable to the "efficiency" a ruling elite, and I'd like to find others who share this as a priority.

Balance between private and communal spaces, soft boundaries. For my own personal sanity, at minimum, I do best with a room that's "just mine" with a door I can close and be left alone when I need space. In terms of gardening, it would be nice to have a commons for everyone, as well as a general, softly defined area that's "mine" to experiment with (and each person having a spot to grow what they want if they so desire), but without having to draw arbitrary hard lines or build fences that say "do not cross here". So a certain degree of "bendability" on everyone's part, combined with a common desire to foster an ecologically harmonious landscape.

Somewhere in the range of 4-12 committed people. This because fewer than 4 doesn't make for much of a "community", but above a dozen, things get ridiculously complicated (and if we're talking about one house, likely impractical, depeding on the size of the building). Probably best to start on the low end of the range, and grow slowly.

Affordable. I seek to minimize time spent in the wage slave system, so money is pretty tight for me (at least partly by choice)... Renting tends to be simplest in the short term, but leaves you with nothing to show for it at the end of the day. Buying means we'd need to be in it for the long haul, and dealing with the legal implications of how to organize (forming a non-profit / land trust / co-op, etc.) Another more radical possibility would be to form a squatting collective, which I would also be open to if I find enough other compatible people also into that idea. Of course it's risky with all sorts of potential pitfalls, and unlikely to last, but weighed against the risk of renting and being kicked out anyway, worth considering as a possibility.

As far as possible from overbearing landlords. I used to think renting from impersonal, distant corporations and property management companies was the worst thing in the world. Then I rented a room in an 8-bedroom house that was owned by one of the roommates who appeared to have intentions in sync with my own goals of environmentally friendly living; there was a nice little garden plot for each person, beautiful food forest type landscaping, and lots of common areas with the potential to socialize and congretate. He ended up being an uptight authoritarian who made rules everyone else hated, arbitrarily changed them as it suited him, and drove all the "nice" roommates away. Exeprience has taught me it's actually a lot easier to deal with apathetic companies who are mainly just concerned with having the rent paid on time, and otherwise generally leave you alone. YMMV.

People who can be relatively chill, respectful of one another.

Minimal or no coercion. I don't like chore checklists, or being around people who want to tell others "you have to do such-and-such." But this also means finding a group where everyone is mature enough to clean up after themselves, have a similar "range" of what they can tolerate in terms of overall cleanliness / messiness in common spaces, and self-motivated enough to do things that need to be done. Also some ability to allow for others whose tastes and "standards" may not be quite the same as your own. I like to think of myself as having these qualities, and would like to find others who share them.

Common desire to live relatively "free" of corporate media propaganda, prioritizing human interactions over entertainment. In other words, I'd rather live in a place where the television is NOT the central focus, if it exists at all. Don't take this to mean I'm against having it around altogether; I enjoy movies, and actually have a decent sized DVD collection myself. If possible though, I'd rather have the "movie watching" area physically separated from the place where people prepare meals, drink morning tea, have group conversations, etc. Or at least be in a place where the tv isn't on all the time overshadowing everything. Rather than try to impose my ways on people, I'd like to find others who understand and share these aesthetics, which is why I've come to realize it's important to communicate up front what I'm looking for.

Animal friendly. I have a cat, who I treasure more than anything in the world. He and I would love to be in a place inhabited by (friendly, non-aggressive) dogs, chickens, and wild creatures of all sorts.

Looking at this list, I know it's a fairly tall order to find a place/group that would satisfy every one of these criteria, but it provides a target to shoot for, even if everything doesn't turn out exactly according to this vision. Not looking to move into anything immediately, and will probably stay where I'm at until at least the end of winter. Right now, I just want to solicit feedback and find connections with others who share similar dreams to manifest, and with luck, maybe a group can form and we can begin planning.

I might crosspost this to craigslist in the future, but for now, permies.com seems like the best place to begin looking.

Micro Farm, shared house 2-3 bedrooms available

Hello fellow earthiests.. I have owned and lived on this interesting piece of land sand-wiched between the Bitteroot River and Hwy. 93 just south of Missoula for 15 years and gradually my garden has grown in size and has been organic all these years. I have an 800sq.' shop up front along the highway and have dreamt of it being a produce stand during the season and have other local foods as well. It just became available again and now that I've decided to share my home, I find myself dreaming of this place becoming a small CSA or some other such expirement in growing or distributing local produce. I would be happy to lease it to anyone aspiring to and capable of making such a business happen. I am a big fan of the permaculture approach and am very open to trying to continue cultivating the diversity on this neat piece o' ground.
I, for various reasons now find myself needing to rent out the 3 bedrooms (the upstairs floor) to make ends meet. I hope for housemates who enjoy the idea of living 2 miles south of Missoula on a small Farm on the bank of the beautiful Bitteroot River with a flock of cool chickens ( I have had the good fortune of selling eggs to Red Bird) and 2 friendly but on the job Dogs and a whole lot of worms in numerous compost piles. My 16 yr. old son and I live here but we will often be out in the big shop below the house or in town at my husbands' house. The kitchen will be occasionally shared, as well as the shower and the laundry.

Missoula ranked among top bicycle friendly cities

I am sure this is already well known to those of you who dwell there, but I just learnt from Metaefficient that Missoula was ranked among the top five bicycle friendly towns/small cities in the nation. His description:

"Located in western Montana, the town of Missoula (pop. 67,000) has operated a bike/pedestrian city office for over 25 years. Home to the University of Montana, the town recently opened a bicycle and pedestrian bridge linking the city center with the campus and 2 major bike paths. Missoula boasts a 5.64% bicycle mode share. And, yes, cycling continues even in the winter due to the town’s dedicated plows for bike lanes and bike paths. Other bike innovations include covered bike racks, bicycle detection at intersections, and Bicycle Ambassadors that teach traffic safety. The Missoula school district includes bike safety and skills as part of the physical education curriculum. The League of American Bicyclists has given the town of Missoula, Montana a silver status in bike-friendliness."

Way to go, Missoula!

~ Matthew N., Southern transplant

I want to do an experiment

Hello SW Montanans.

My name is Tate and I am moving to Bozeman next June. Since this Missoula forum is the closest thing to that part of the state I thought it would be a good place to post this question.

I want to convert a stretch of asphalt/concrete paving into native forage using only livestock (maybe a hint of machinery, but primarily herbivorous ungulates).

So, I am looking for somebody with an abandoned parking lot, paved road, network of sidewalks, or biggest and baddest an airplane tarmack!

The idea is to break up the paving with hoof action of the animals and possibly a bit of chipping from machinery just to get the process started. Let the freeze thaw cycle do some work on it to get the paving broke up even more.
This will allow for common paving weeds to infiltrate, and these will be grazed. Through high stock densities and rotational grazing (which means more pounds of livestock/sq ft) the paving will continue to be broken down. After this treatment continues the chunks of broken paving will be essentially "piled" by the livestock kicking it around. This piling will increase point water flow to plants, and create a heat source as well. Eventually, after grazing outside the treatment area and then inside, native seeds will be introduced through animal and other movement.

I would really like this dream of mine to be fulfilled so if anyone has suggestions on a possible location to maybe do something like this that would be awesome!!!

I know, not really in line with this section of the forum and its a super off the wall idea.

Thanks though and I look forward to your ideas!!

Tate

9/22 Vandana Shiva movie, Bullshit

This Week, Thursday September 22
Bullshit (USA/India: 2005, 73 min.)
Thursday, September 22, 2011, 7:00pm, U.C. Theater
With Vandana Shiva
Opponents gave her the Bullshit Award
Time Magazine hailed her as one of the great heroes of our time.

Vandana ShivaIn this documentary, we follow environmental activist and nuclear physicist Vandana Shiva for a period of two years, a whirlwind tour from her organic farm at the foot of the Himalayas to the summit of the World Trade Organization in Mexico to a protest outside the European Patents Office in Munich. Here, in these institutions of power, Shiva does battle with the proponents of globalization, multi-national corporations like Monsanto, an American bio-tech company manufacturing genetically modified foods (whom Shiva holds responsible for a rash of farmers’ suicides) and Coca-Cola, accused of depleting and contaminating groundwater in India.

A portrait of a tireless and fearless activist (Shiva is a recipient of the Right Livelihood Award and the United Nations’ Earth Day International Award), Bullshit also gives voice to the small farmers affected by these policies, as well as to some of her staunchest opponents, including executives from Monsanto and Coca-Cola, and especially Barun Mitra, a neo-liberal lobbyist who gave Shiva the “Bullshit Award” for espousing lies about the negative effects of globalization (upon receiving the award, Shiva mockingly retorted that “cow dung is the most beautiful of materials”).

An insightful, eye-opening, and exhilarating film, Bullshit elucidates some of the most pressing social and technological questions of the 21st century – can genetically modified foods alleviate world hunger? is it legal for corporations to patent natural crops? can indigenous knowledge inform modern genetic engineering? – as it takes you to the frontlines of the war over globalization.

inland northwest permaculture convergence

Zoomoolians!

I will be presenting at the Inland Northwest Permaculture Convergence in Spokane on November 4, 5 and 6. And, of course, there will be a whole bunch of other permaculture presentations going on too.

If you get a ticket before October 15, it looks like they are just $60.

I'll be giving three presentations (each of which I will record for a podcast):

Rocket Mass Heaters
Wofati Eco Buildings
Replacing Irrigation with Permaculture

I'm looking through the list of presenters/presentations and I can already see lots of stuff I wanna catch. I hope I'm not scheduled at the same time. Some of the presenters are people in my videos!

And, of course, between presentations, in the mornings and evenings, we'll all get to hang out. And remind people how Missoula is more awesome than the rest of the PNW! :)

http://inlandnorthwestpermaculture.com/
